We are seeking to recruit a Research Associate to work within the ‘AMR Theme 4 – Tackling antimicrobial resistance: behaviour within and beyond the Healthcare Setting’ programme funded by ESRC. The post would support a multidisciplinary research project entitled “Diagnostic innovation and livestock (DIAL): towards more effective and sustainable applications of antibiotics in livestock farming”. The project involves a consortium of 7 investigators including 2 at the University of Bristol and will be based within the School of Veterinary Sciences at the University of Bristol, but the post-holder will work with colleagues at the Universities of Exeter and Edinburgh as well as the British Veterinary Association and leading farm animal veterinarians across the UK.
The post-holder will be responsible for: carrying out the programme of qualitative (including interviews and surveys) and ethnographic social science research into the current use of diagnostic tools and practices on farms and within veterinary practices and their relationship to antibiotic prescription and use within different livestock systems; working with the project team in the charting, experimental testing and assessment of the development and use of new diagnostic tools and practices; and reviewing policy developments in the practice and governance of antibiotic use in livestock systems.
The post-holder will be expected to travel to veterinary practices and farms, liaise with farmers and veterinary surgeons and complete on-farm and in-practice data collection. They will undertake data analysis, report-writing and will take part in impact events, including dissemination of outcomes to farmers, veterinarians and other stakeholders.
The successful applicant will preferably have a postgraduate degree in a related social science discipline, may have a veterinary qualification and may be a Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. A track record of research, including the analysis of qualitative data, resulting in peer-reviewed journal publications, is desirable. Experience of working in multidisciplinary teams and being able to manage multiple projects is essential. Experience and interest in public engagement activities is desirable.
