Employee Relations Specialist

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST; see www.oist.jp) is a dynamic new graduate university of science and technology in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The university is located on 85 hectares of protected forestland overlooking beautiful shoreline and coral reefs. The campus is striking architecturally, and the facilities are outstanding (OIST campus video tour). There are no academic departments, which facilitates multidisciplinary research. Outstanding resources and equipment are provided and managed to encourage easy access and collaboration. English is the official language of the University, and the university research community is fully international, with more than 50 countries represented. OIST is rapidly gaining recognition in the worldwide academic community as a model for excellence in education and research.

Position summary:

  • The Employment Relations Specialist is a newly created position and is located in the Gender
  • Equality and Human Resource Development Division (GEHR). S/he reports to the Vice
  • President for GEHR and is expected to work closely with the General Counsel’s Office and the
  • Administrative Compliance Division in addition to the other sections within the GEHR Division.

Responsibilities:

  1. Develop, update (as required) and implement OIST policies and procedures on conflict resolution
  2. Ensure that OIST policies and procedures on Employee Relations are updated and compliant with the relevant Japanese laws and regulations and understood by all members of the OIST community
  3. Investigate employee complaints of workplace‐related misconduct or conflict or violation of policies and regulations and take appropriate action
  4. Advise and coach supervisors on building productive relationships with and between staff, as well as on dealing with difficult employees
  5. Facilitate the departure process of employees, including assisting with termination decisions, notification communications relating to termination.

Term:

Full‐time, fixed term appointment for 2 years. Contract initially with 3 month probationary period (inclusive). This contract may be renewed.
