Associate Provost for Graduate Studies

Job duties and responsibilities:
The employee will be based in Astana, Kazakhstan

Reports to:  the Provost of “Nazarbayev University”

Responsible for: Managing and monitoring NU Graduate Programs.

Main Purpose of the Role

The Associate Provost of Graduate Studies will oversee the academic and administrative support for all NU masters and doctoral students and post-doctoral scholars. 

It is assumed that the successful candidate will hold the rank of Professor in an internationally ranked university, or in one of the NU Schools. 

He or she will have a distinguished record as a scholar and teacher, should have a PhD or an equivalent doctorate, with experience in supervising doctoral students.
 
Main Duties and Responsibilities
 
Reporting to the Provost, the Associate Provost of Graduate Studies will oversee academic and administrative support for graduate students and post-doctoral scholars at NU. This includes reviewing and monitoring the portfolio of graduate programs; oversight of student applications, admissions, registration and enrollment, monitoring and recording of academic progress and milestones (residency, qualifying examinations, candidacy, defense of dissertation), support for professional development in research skills and ethical standards, support for scholarly conferences and research projects and the awarding of degrees. He or she will be also actively support career planning for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist graduate students to apply for teaching, research and service awards, and internal and external research grants, in accordance with University policy.
  • Ensure doctoral supervisors receive appropriate training.
  • To actively uphold and communicate the values of the university, including on all aspects of academic integrity, as stated in the NU Learning and Teaching Strategy and other university policies. 
  • Develop own research interests.
  • Undertake professional development consistent with the role of Associate Provost.
  • Work effectively with Deans, Departments and Office of the Provost to encourage collaboration across and between NU Schools, Departments and research centres.
  • Encourage technology transfer and commercialization of intellectual properties developed by graduate students and post-doctoral scholars.  
  • To liaise with all departments and units on all academic and pastoral issues affecting masters and doctoral students and post-doctoral scholars. 
  • Ensure that graduate student feedback on courses and programs is communicated to faculty, and that action plans are developed and implemented, consistent with the NU Quality Framework.
