About the Position

Position Summary

New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seeks to appoint a Research Ethics and Governance Manager reporting directly to the Associate Director of Research Administration. 

The Research Ethics and Governance Manager works across the University to promote research integrity and ensure that the research carried out by or through the University meets both statutory, regulatory, and University ethical obligations. The incumbent will be responsible for designing, developing, implementing, evaluating and continually improving the university-wide human subjects and animal ethics related compliance programs at NYUAD, and other programs developed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administration of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) applications, reviews, board minutes and decisions in accordance with NYUAD polices, IRB polices, and UAE and US federal regulations
  • Oversee and ensure ethics protocols are tracked and completed in a timely fashion and ensure that researches are appropriately informed with respect to ethical certification requirements
  • As the IRB Chair’s Designee, acts as a primary reviewer of Expedited and Exempt protocols
  • Develop, review and update the University’s research ethics strategy to ensure that the University’s research is conducted according to the highest ethical standard and in line with regulatory requirements, legislative changes and best practice
  • Draft annual reports/projections of all protocols
  • Responsible for the continued development and implementation of a post-IRB approval monitoring program of research studies involving human subjects, as well as other quality improvement activities
  • Responsible for the development, implementation and oversight of the HRPP to ensure that research personnel, IRB members and staff and other persons charged with the protection of research participants receive and maintain the training and education necessary to fulfill their obligations in the research enterprise
  • Develop review mechanism for students working on capstone projects which will require work with human subjects
  • Serve as the point person between the NYUAD IRB and the NYU NY UCAIHS Office.
  • Provide guidance regarding the interpretation of regulations, laws, and policies on matters of ethics and compliance to researchers, staff, students and NYUAD administrators
  • Serve as the resource on all ethics and compliance policy and procedures for governmental authorities and regulatory bodies
  • Promote compliance with the terms of NYUAD’s Federalwide Assurance (FWA) as well as with NYUAD policies and procedures, local laws and US federal regulations related to the review of human research
  • Perform quality assurance monitoring of research protocols and investigate matters of non-compliance. Implement corrective action(s) as needed in accordance with UAE and US federal regulations, NYUAD policies, and IRB policies and procedures. Assess institutional risk and identify vulnerabilities in the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) and other programs
  • Investigate and manage complaints relating to human subject and animal ethics in conjunction with the relevant chairperson/ director
  • Communicate pertinent information to other IRB staff, IRB members, and investigators in a timely manner
  • Provide required reports and updates to OHRP to document changes in the IRB roster
  • Assist with disseminating educational resources and training programs for staff, faculty, committee members, and research teams. Develop and deliver regular training programs on research ethics and new developments in the field of research governance
  • Coordinate development of website material and external communication relating to research ethics and governance
  • Automate process and develop automated workflows for submission and approval of IRB and other related application. Act as a principal liaison in the implementation of new contracts management system
  • Create and manage strategies to monitor and address perceived or actual conflicts of interest
  • Monitor federal regulatory websites and other research-related resources to stay current with regulatory changes in human research protection guidelines and policies
  • Supervise and develop staff in the Ethics Administration team

Education Requirements

Essential

  • Bachelor Degree

Desirable

  • Degree is Law or social science background
  • Professional certification in human subjects research ethics and participation in related training courses

Experience Requirements

Essential

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience of working with ethics boards in a research environment, preferably within a university context
  • Experience in the interpretation and administration of regulations, policies and processes
  • Knowledge of human ethics guidelines, regulations and laws
  • Knowledge of US Federal and international requirements related to the conduct of human subjects
  • Strong Computer Skills (e.g. Microsoft Office software)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships with stakeholders including, staff, senior leaders and external partners
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision
  • Ability to work in a small, fast-paced environment, demonstrating initiative and dependability
