Position Description

We are seeking applications for a preceptor in Molecular and Cellular Biology who will primarily have responsibility for Life Sciences 1b (LS1b), “An Integrated Introduction to the Life Sciences: Genetics, Genomics, and Evolution,” a large introductory course for undergraduates that integrates genetics, genomics, and evolution. The preceptor will be responsible for designing and supervising the laboratory and discussion section components of the course; working with faculty to prepare assessments of student learning; supervising and training a staff of approximately 30 teaching fellows, as well as a team of undergraduates who run weekly help sessions; acting as primary liaison between instructional staff and the laboratory support group; maintaining grade books; and overseeing teaching fellow grading policies. Additionally, the Preceptor will be expected to contribute to other curricular activities in the life sciences, and coordinate with faculty to develop other innovative teaching materials.

The appointment is expected to begin on September 1, 2017 or as early as is feasible. The preceptor will report to the lead faculty instructors of LS1b. The initial appointment is for one year, renewable on a yearly basis for up to eight years, contingent upon performance, enrollments, and curricular need.

Basic Qualifications

Doctorate in a Life Sciences field with demonstrated experience teaching undergraduate students in science.

Additional Qualifications

Proven expertise in genetics, evolution, and/or molecular biology. Superior organizational, written and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to lead and train teaching fellows and to manage relationships with hundreds of undergraduate students. Experience in designing problem sets, in-class activities, and laboratory exercises strongly preferred.
