Description of Work Unit

The Collaborative for Student Achievement’s mission is empowering students to create and achieve their personal and educational goals. Student Achievement is a dynamic organization that integrates the curricular and co-curricular experiences for students and creates inclusive communities that have positively impacted the academic success, retention and graduation of CSU students. The Collaborative for Student Achievement reports to both Academic Affairs and Student Affairs and is made up of the following units: Advising for Undeclared Students, Community for Excellence Scholar Programs, Key Communities, Orientation and Transition Programs, Outreach and Support Programs, and Health Professions Advising.

In all its activities, the Collaborative emphasizes and enhances students’ abilities and assets, and supports the campus priority for a diverse and supportive learning environment.

This position reports to the Assistant Director for the Community for Excellence Scholar Programs who oversees the university-wide Community for Excellence retention initiatives.

Position Summary

The Community for Excellence is an innovative and collaborative initiative at Colorado State University (CSU) that assists students who are part of CSU’s access pipeline and are recipients of an access-oriented scholarship or award program. Designed to increase success rates and decrease graduation gaps among underrepresented students, the Community for Excellence reaches into the extensive high school and community college pipeline of first generation, low-income, and underrepresented racial/ethnic groups to connect with students before they enroll at CSU. The honor of the award includes financial support augmented with a dedicated CSU staff member who provides information, mentorship, and support, while facilitating the students’ engagement with resources that are most critical to success.

Within the CSU community, the Community for Excellence is accomplished by co-leadership with the Access Center and the Collaborative for Student Achievement. The Access Center oversees the external partnerships and the Collaborative for Student Achievement oversees the scholar support programs, along with intensive collaboration with Admissions, the Office of Financial Aid, and Student Diversity Programs and Services for scholar identification and support. This collaboration involves developing a smooth transition between access programs and university retention programs, and coordinating across campus to provide uniform, consistent activities and requirements among designated scholarship or award programs. The Community for Excellence Scholar Success Specialist is a full-time position responsible for supporting and mentoring Award recipients, which includes the critical areas of academic success, career development, and leadership development, while promoting student retention and graduation.

  • Master’s Degree by start of employment or a Bachelor’s Degree and minimum of 2 years’ professional experience, including experience while a student, in student services in higher education or related field
  • Experience working with students providing one-on-one and group interactions to assist in their academic success and graduation
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to diversity and inclusiveness, experience working with diverse populations across the breadth of diversity

Essential Duties

Job Duty Category Mentoring Scholars Duty/Responsibility

Serve as the primary mentor for a caseload of approximately 150-200 Community for Excellence Award recipients (Scholars) to promote student’s success by:

  • Provide ongoing and developmentally appropriate support and resource referral to continuing students throughout their undergraduate career, including academic success, preparing for graduate school, leadership development, and on-campus engagement; understand and articulate the needs of all students, including first-generation students, students of color, and Pell Grant Eligible students
  • Assess the academic, personal, social, and cultural needs of students and develop appropriate plans for addressing these issues
  • Meetings with students regularly to promote the development of essential skills, such as time management, study strategies, and use of campus resources, and assist them in achieving their goals
  • Provide proactive strategic outreach to students that may need additional support, conduct once a semester academic progress discussion and provide intentional outreach to students facing academic difficulty by getting them connected to academic resources facilitated by the student’s college/department, or meeting with the student regularly
  • Provide appropriate referrals to university resources, including but not limited to the Student Disability Center, Student Case Management, the Office of Financial Aid, the Health Network, Academic Success Coordinator/Advisor, etc.

Community Building and Activity Planning

  • Coordinate group meetings or programs, as needed, that build community amongst the Scholars of diverse backgrounds, and expose Scholars to campus and community resources and opportunities
  • Serve as a liaison to strategic Community for Excellence Partners/Foundations

Fall Academic Summit:

  • Assist the Assistant Director with the planning and implementation of the Fall Academic Summit
  • Attend the Fall Academic Summit and facilitate the small-group portion of the event for the Scholars on the assigned caseload
  • Email and call students in advance to encourage their attendance at this required event by providing event information and/or the need to complete a make-up appointment if absent from the event
  • Ensure students sign a Plan of Support.

Spring Celebration of Graduates:

  • Assist the Assistant Director with the planning and implementation of the Spring Celebration of Graduates
  • Attend the Celebration of Graduates
  • Email and call current students and graduates in advance to encourage their attendance
  • Nominate and prepare student speakers

  • Maintain accurate and detailed contact notes, and track student performance using web-hosted applications and local databases
  • Assist with the development of and coordinate the collection of data related to the Community for Excellence’s goals, learning outcomes, retention goals, and students’ academic performance

Percentage Of Time 5 Job Duty Category Student Recruitment and Early Outreach Duty/Responsibility

  • Assist in occasional presentations given to admitted students and their families/guests associated with the Community for Excellence Partner Programs/Schools during Admitted Student Events such as Choose CSU
  • Assist in the planning, development, and implementation of occasional college visits from Partner Programs/Schools with the goal of helping students understand the combined benefit of the Community for Excellence’s financial and non-financial support
  • Provide proactive, intentional, and general assistance to newly admitted students using the Community for Excellence Early Outreach Plan, which includes assisting students with admissions confirmation, financial aid applications and requirement completion, scholarship applications, on- or off-campus housing, RAM Orientation, placement exams, health insurance, immunizations, and Ram Welcome
  • Occasionally travel off-campus to meet with admitted high school students to explain the Community for Excellence and talk about the benefits of the program

  • Serve as a resource for campus Scholar Contacts who are part of the Community for Excellence Scholar Network
  • Maintain strong partnerships with the Community for Excellence on-campus partners and Scholar Contacts; support on-campus retention initiatives with special focus on students from diverse communities
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of a shared vision for the Community for Excellence at CSU
  • Stay abreast of national best practices relative to mentoring and scholarship work
  • Support the goals and values of the Community for Excellence and University by personal example
  • Serve as a positive role model for students
