Applied Physicist in the Experimental Physics Department (EP), CMS Experiment Systems Group (CMX), Detector Applications Section (DA).
The EP Department carries out basic research in the field of experimental particle and nuclear physics. It aims at providing a stimulating atmosphere for detector R&D and physics analysis and is an important reference centre for the particle and nuclear physics community at larger. It contributes to the education and training of young scientists.
The CMS Experiment is one of the four large experiments of the LHC at CERN. The CMX Group is responsible for ensuring high performance of the present CMS Detector and its infrastructure and also for the design and realization of Phase II upgrades to the CMS Detector, necessary for exploiting the maximum physics potential of CMS during the future High Luminosity LHC era.
The CMS Detector Applications Section (DA) contributes directly to the CMS Tracker, Muons, Electromagnetic Calorimeter, High Granularity Calorimeter and Beam Radiation Instrumentation and Luminosity Projects, and the DA section members share technical knowledge across these projects.
As an Applied Physicist you will play a leading role in the detector development for the CMS BRIL Project, working with other CERN departments and with international collaborators.
- Assure the fullest availability and optimal performance of the presently installed CMS BRIL sub-systems for beam radiation, luminosity and machine induced background measurements.
- Play a leading role in the development and upgrade of the beam radiation instrumentation and luminosity (BRIL) detector systems of the CMS detector.
- Play a leading role in the consolidation necessary for the Fast Beams Conditions Monitor and Pixel Luminosity Telescope in LHC Long Shutdown 2.
- Actively contribute to the design features enabling the exploitation of the CMS inner tracker for the purpose of luminosity and machine induced background measurements for the Phase II era of the CMS detector.
- Be responsible for the BRIL detector laboratory at CERN and in optimising its setup for Phase II detector development.
- Contribute to the understanding and prediction of the CMS prompt and residual radiation environment in the CMS cavern and CMS detector sub-systems and contribute to the upgrade strategy for radiation monitoring for CMS in Phase II.
- Supervise CERN fellows and students.
Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Particle Physics, Particle Detectors, Beam Instrumentation, Radiation Physics or equivalent.
Experience and competencies
The experience required for this post is:
- Extensive experience in developing, constructing, installing and operating solid-state detectors.
- Previous experience in working with backend electronics, real time data acquisitions and radiation simulation tools or studies.
- Demonstrated competence in coordinating small teams.
- Experience in working effectively with students and other collaborators.
The technical competencies required for this post are:
- Detector design, construction, testing and operation.
- Solid-state based particle detection technologies.
- Application of instrumentation and measurement techniques.
- Detector performance simulation and analysis.
- Simulation of radiation environments.

The language competencies required are:
- Spoken and written English: ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations. Willingness to learn French.
