School of Product Design, College of Engineering

  • Continuing (permanent/tenured) position
  • Full-time (i.e. 37.5 hours per week)

With the creation of a new School of Product Design, the College of Engineering at the University of Canterbury is launching a new and exciting degree, the Bachelor of Product Design, with the following three majors:

  • Industrial Product Design
  • Applied Immersive Game Design
  • Chemical, Natural and Healthcare Product Formulation

Each of the three-year degree programmes comprise just over one third design courses, just under one half supporting science and engineering courses and one sixth business courses. More information on the degree programmes can be found at http://www.canterbury.ac.nz/future-students/qualifications-and-courses/bachelors-degrees/bachelor-of-product-design/ . The first student intake will be February 2018 and interest in the new degree appears to be very strong.

Applications are invited for a full-time, continuing (i.e. permanent) position in the School of Product Design at the level of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer. Applicants in any discipline related to the three areas will be considered and will preferably hold a PhD in a relevant area, with a strong record in teaching and research or creative design practice. The successful candidate will have a commitment to excellence in teaching of core courses in design at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and will be expected to establish a vigorous research programme. The appointee will be expected to supervise undergraduate design projects, Masters and Ph.D. students, collaborate with others in the University, and to contribute to School, College, and University activities. The appointee will also be encouraged to develop links with the wider design industry at local, national and international levels. This is an exciting opportunity to join the School at its very beginning and to help shape the future of this new area of teaching, practice and research.

The College of Engineering has extensive teaching and research facilities, and those dedicated specifically to the School of Product Design will grow with student numbers as each successive year of the degree is offered over the next few years. The undergraduate degree will include significant hands-on experience in physical prototyping, so there is scope for the appointee to influence the purchase of early resources relevant to their design discipline.

Initial enquiries can be made in confidence to Professor Conan Fee, Head of the School of Product Design at conan.fee@canterbury.ac.nz

The closing date for this position is: Friday, 18 August 2017 (NZ time).
