Expressions of interest are invited from suitably qualified scientists wishing to develop their scientific research career as an EMBL Australia Partner Laboratory Group Leader hosted at the Department of Genome Sciences at The John Curtin School of Medical Research (JCSMR), The Australian National University (ANU), Canberra, Australia.

EMBL Australia Partner Laboratory Network: Australia is the first associate member of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). EMBL is an intergovernmental research organisation distributed across six sites in Germany, Italy, Spain, UK and France that fosters excellence by providing a highly collaborative environment that benefits the research of all its scientists, whether at graduate, post-doctoral or group leader level. A key initiative of the associate membership is the EMBL Australia Partner Laboratory Network, a partnership of Australian research institutions, which - following the EMBL’s operational model - provide long-term funded research-only positions allowing early to mid-career researchers to pursue ambitious research programs. The John Curtin School of Medical Research performs research in Immunology, Genomics, Cancer and Neuroscience. All of these groups produce large amounts of data, providing outstanding collaborative opportunities for experienced bioinformaticians. JCSMR operates its own sequencing facility, and also supports the Canberra Clinical Genomics facility that services local hospitals. The ACRF Department of Cancer Biology and Therapeutics runs a functional genomic screening facility that generates and analyses will be producing large volumes of genomic and biological data related to cancer research. The JCSMR Centre for Personalised Immunology uses large-scale clinical genomics data to identify causes of pathological immune function. The Genome Sciences Department uses various high-throughput sequence techiques combined with model systems to identify transcription factor, epigenetic and RNA-mediated processes that control gene expression during differentiation and disease. The National Centre for Indigenous Genomics, located within JCSMR, has the goal of generating large amounts of Indigenous genomic sequences to build a reference genome and understand genetic diversity. All of these large-scale integrated data sets, available at JCSMR, provide fruitful bases for collaboration.
JCSMR employs a large number of bioinformaticians, either in the laboratories of our researchers or centrally, supplying bioinformatics insights to our researchers and students. This service provides assistance to the whole of ANU and beyond. The appointee would be encouraged to take a leadership role in this broad delivery of bioinformatics expertise.
The appointee to this position is expected to take advantage of the large amount of data that is created at JCSMR and ANU and to add significant value to its analysis. The appointee would also be expected to run an independent research program in an area of bioinformatics that is synergistic with the research that is being performed at ANU.
The position will be hosted in the Department of Genome Sciences, led by Professor David Tremethick. The appointee would also be expected to build a vibrant, academic bioinformatics laboratory at JCSMR, driving research that connects multiple levels of data across genomics, epigenetics, chromatin structure, coding and non-coding RNA.
The appointee will benefit from the proximity of JCSMR to the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) facility, which houses Australia’s largest public access parallel computer. There is very strong computational expertise in other schools at ANU, expecially the School of Computer Sciences.
The position provides research-intensive employment as an independent laboratory head, the opportunity to foster excellence and deliver leadership in a range of medical research projects, to supervise students, and to undertake professional activities and policy development in an academic discipline within the School, the University, and the research community.
The successful applicant will lead a research group for a period of five years, with the possibility of extension for an additional four years. The successful applicant will participate in the collegial, collaborative culture of the EMBL Australia Partner Laboratory Network. The candidate will actively support in the development of the network through participation in the various programs aimed to internationalise research conducted in Australia via linking activities with EMBL, especially in developing a relationship with the EMBL-EBI.
Duration: The appointment will be for a period of five years with the possibility of extension for an additional four years.
Level: Appointment will be made at the relevant level, subject to the skills and experience of the successful candidate. The salary will be at ANU Academic Level C or D ($133,296 - $170,322 inclusive of 17% superannuation contributions) plus EMBL Australia loading.
Commencement Date: The start date will be negotiated with the successful applicant.
