The School of Life and Medical Sciences at the University of Hertfordshire is seeking to appoint a full-time permanent Senior Lecturer to offer academic student support in areas such as numeracy, statistics and pastoral care. This post is open to applicants with an academic background in any of the disciplines in Life and Medical Sciences (Biosciences, Geography & Environment, Nutrition & Dietetics, Psychology, Sports Studies and Sciences, Pharmacy/Pharmacology). The successful candidate will lead a new academic support unit within the School to promote the enhancement of the educational experience of students. In addition, the appointee will lead on staff development initiatives, including bespoke support where needed, aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of pedagogic activities principally in assessment and feedback. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the teaching, supervision and assessment of students on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and to engage in research and other scholarly activity within their area of expertise. As the role is student-facing the appointee will be supportive to students in the role of a senior pastoral tutor.

Skills and experience needed:

Applicants should have demonstrable leadership skills, commitment to enhancing the student experience and development of academic staff, and experience of teaching to a high standard in Higher Education. A background in HE pedagogy, particularly relating to academic support, is essential, as are effective communication skills and the ability to lead new initiatives. A professional approach to the management of curricula, teaching and academic administration is required, as well as the ability to work constructively with others and prioritise to meet deadlines.
Research outputs in education/L&T would be an advantage.

Qualifications required:

Essential:

  • PhD in cognate area 
  • Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy
  • Proficiency in English language, numeracy and statistics

Desirable:

  • Membership of a professional body
  • Degree in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education / PGCE (or equivalent)
  • Experience in coaching or mentoring others
