The Department of Music at the Faculty of Humanities at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a full permanent position at the rank of Associate Professor in Music Technology.

The Department

The Department of Music consists of four university programmes covering Musicology, Music Performance Studies, Music Technology, and Dance Studies. The department, which is located on Dragvoll campus and in Olavskvartalet, Trondheim, is part of the Faculty of Humanities. The Department of Music currently has 57 staff in academic positions and 10 postdoctoral/ Ph.D candidates within musicology and artistic

The position is related to the music technology group with three professors and two associate professors. Music technology at NTNU is a cross-disciplinary collaboration hosted by the Department of Music, and also involving the Department of Electronic systems and the Department of Computer Science. The group is responsible for a three-year bachelor’s programme and a two-year master’s programme, in addition to supervising students within PhD and Artistic research fellowship programmes. The music technology education is localized in the center of Trondheim.

Starting in August 2018, a new international master’s programme in “Music, Communication and Technology” (MCT) will be launched as a joint initiative with the Department of Musicology at the University of Oslo. The programme is novel in both its two-campus organization, as well as its strong focus on innovative learning strategies, including a complete “flipped classroom” ideology. The new position will have an important role in building up this new programme.

Field of research and teaching for the professorship

The successful applicant is expected to play a leading role in research and research based education in music technology in cooperation with the existing staff. Research activities are expected to have a strong international profile and impact. The field of musical technology connects to several neighbouring disciplines such as music performance, musicology, acoustics, media technology, media art, psychology, and cross-disciplinary activities in teaching and research are expected.

The candidate should have a broad foundation in music technology and must be able to demonstrate a solid scientific knowledge and research experience in audio signal processing and programming, with particular applications for music.

In addition, the candidate must be able to demonstrate a solid scientific knowledge and research experience in one or more of the following:

  • Sonification and sound design
  • Spatial audio and virtual/augmented reality
  • Music performance and digital musical instruments
  • Interactive audio and game audio
  • Interfaces for musical expression, including sensors and hardware
  • Telematic performance

Strategic considerations may be taken in the final selection of candidates.

Responsibilities and duties

MSc and PhD candidates from the study programs of the faculty are expected to be competitive in an international job market. The successful applicant will play a leading role in developing the educational profile in music technology and ensuring an excellent learning environment, in collaboration with colleagues, students, and external stakeholders. The music technology master’s programs should have a strong international profile, and the associate professor is expected to be able to contribute to the development of international alliances and collaboration. She or he is expected to teach relevant courses at all levels and should supervise MSc and PhD students.

The professor is expected to work actively to receive research grants and other external income from the Research Council of Norway, Nordic and European research and educational agencies, relevant industry, and other available sources.

In addition to research and education, a professor is expected to be able to disseminate relevant parts of her/his research to a wider audience.

The professor is expected to participate in the formal management of research, education, and other relevant areas of activity in agreement with the Head of the Department.


The applicant must have a PhD in the field of music technology. The candidate's personal aptitude and motivation for the position will be assigned great weight in the selection process, as well as the research focus to be implemented.

The applicant must document practical competence in teaching. She or he should demonstrate the ability to develop educational activities and the learning environment. She or he should have experience in the supervision of master's and doctoral students or similar experience qualifying for such work. The applicant should demonstrate communicative skills that qualify for excellent teaching, supervision, and dissemination.

NTNU is strongly committed to new forms of learning and assessment. The candidate needs to show an interest for work in this area, including “flipped classroom”, problem-based learning, and guiding students on innovation and entrepreneurship.

The applicant should demonstrate professional qualifications within relevant areas of music technology and scientific/artistic competence within one or more areas of specialty. She or he should have a good publication record in terms of papers in peer-reviewed journals and other relevant international publication channels. Documented external funding and experience with research leadership will be rated positively. A person employed in the category of associate professor should have research potential which makes it likely to qualify for full professorship within five years of employment, even with normal teaching burdens.

Regulations and Salary

Academic staff without formal pedagogical qualifications in university-level teaching, and who are unable to document equivalent qualifications, are required to successfully complete a recognized course that provides pedagogical qualifications in university-level teaching within two years after starting in the position. The university offers such courses.

Applicants who have been short-listed will be called for an interview and invited to demonstrate their pedagogical skills, usually by means of a trial teaching session.

The person appointed will be required to abide by the regulations that govern changes and developments within the discipline, and to follow the requirements of all organizational changes that decisions relating to the university's activities may involve.

It is required that the person appointed is available to the institution on a daily basis.

The appointment will be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants.

It is policy within the state sector that employees should come from backgrounds that reflect as fully as possible the diversity of the population at large. The position of Associate Professor, position code 1011, is remunerated based on the national salary scheme, with a minimum gross salary of NOK 485.700,-. The successful applicant will normally be remunerated by NOK 542.500 - NOK 598.200,- . Two percent of gross salary is deducted and paid into the State Pension Scheme.
