Postdoctoral Fellow in Olfaction, Cognition and Aging

Ref. No. SU FV-0953-17

at the Department of Psychology.

The Department of Psychology is a part of the Faculty for Social Sciences and is one of the largest departments at Stockholm University. Our courses span all levels from undergraduate to PhD and the department comprises over 160 members of staff. The department is divided into six research areas, including the Division of Perception and Psychophysics, which is also called the Gösta Ekman Laboratory. The postdoctoral position is part of a research grant from the Swedish Foundation for the Humanities and Social Sciences to the research program ”Our unique sense of smell”.

Project description

The research program “Our unique sense of smell” aims to explain the role of olfactory function as a predictor cognitive decline and impending dementia in old age. The research is accomplished through collaboration with two large population-based longitudinal studies on aging and health in Sweden – The Betula project and The Swedish National Study on Aging and Care – Kungsholmen (SNAC-K).

Main responsibilities

Both databases include information from large cognitive test batteries (including olfactory memory tests), biomarkers (such as gene polymorphisms), and brain imaging data. The postdoc will evaluate aging trajectories using these variables. Over the course of the postdoctoral appointment, the candidate will plan research, analyze data, and write and publish research articles together with project collaborators. Within the project, international collaborations are encouraged, and the postdoc is expected to present their work at national and international research conferences.

Qualification requirements

Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are eligible for a position as postdoctoral fellow if he or she has a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country in psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, statistics, epidemiology or related discipline.

Assessment criteria

The degree should have been completed no more than three years before the deadline for applications. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar.

In the appointment process, particular weight will be given to research proficiency. Candidates should have high analytical and statistical proficiency, and be skilled in scientific writing and communication. It is considered favorable if the candidate has documented experience in the field of olfaction or cognitive aging, and prior experiences with population-based longitudinal databases and relevant analysis techniques, as well as brain imaging analysis methods. The candidate should be flexible, communicative and collaborative. Independence and strong motivation are expected throughout the project. Excellent English language skills are required.

Terms of employment

The position involves full-time employment for a maximum of two years, a competitive salary and excellent fringe benefits. Start date as per agreement.
