Head of the Leicester School of Architecture
Like the city of Leicester on its doorstep, De Montfort University (DMU) is a vibrant, multicultural hub of creativity and innovation. DMU has significantly improved its ranking position in recent years and offers a distinctive student experience and a firm commitment to the public good and transformational scholarship. The Leicester School of Architecture, now based at the new, award winning, Vijay Patel Building, has made major advances in recent years across teaching and research. The School’s 550-strong student community of undergraduate, postgraduate and research students study a range of professionally recognised, multidisciplinary courses. The School’s students consistently win national and regional prizes - three or more Silver awards in the prestigious RIBA President’s Medals in recent years and other awards including the RIBA Wren Scholarship, the 3D Reid Prize, the RIBA East Midlands Prize (in 2014 and 2016) and the RIBA Bronze Award Commendation. The School has a growing research profile, in particular through its interaction with DMU’s Institute of Energy & Sustainable Development, through which potential exists for wider academic collaboration.
Building on the School’s strengths and reputation, the University is now seeking to appoint a Head of the Leicester School of Architecture who will provide academic leadership and management to the School of circa 24 (FTE) staff. The Head of School will lead in further enhancing the School’s teaching, research and external profile, and will be a key contributor in the development and implementation of strategic planning and policy development across the Faculty as part of its executive team.
DMU is looking for candidates who will bring a strong background in architectural education and/or practice, who are, ideally, registered architects and able to demonstrate persuasive communication skills and the ability to be a positive champion of architectural education and research. They will bring management and leadership experience, and, ideally, have a track record of curriculum development. An ability to think strategically and to communicate the Faculty and University vision to other members of staff in order to enthuse, inspire and drive change will be essential. Depending on experience, the new Head of School may be eligible for Professorial status.
