About the Department
The Department of Physics and Astronomy's ARC Centre of Excellence for Nanoscale Biophotonics (CNBP) explores new methods of probing nanoscale phenomena in living systems. This Centre has three nodes: the University of Adelaide, Adelaide, South Australia; Macquarie University, Sydney, NSW; and RMIT, Melbourne, Victoria. We currently number over 200 researchers including 10 Chief Investigators, over 10 international Partner Investigators, Associate Investigators, research staff and postgraduate students. The Centre pursues both fundamental and applied research projects. Its investigators have a strong track record of publications in the top journals and through generation of licensed patents. The ARC Centre of Excellence for Nanoscale Biophotonics (CNBP) Macquarie Node is seeking TWO Post-Doctoral Research Fellows to develop and apply new tools for the quantitative optical analysis of molecular processes in living cells. These positions are focussed on the core mission of CNBP of sensing in living biological systems and they will involve a broad range of multidisciplinary collaborations
The successful applicants will be led by our CNBP Chief Investigator and Centre Deputy Director, Professor Ewa Goldys. They will join a large, and growing, group of world-class researchers working in this rapidly developing area. Researchers will work with the large team of researchers in Sydney where the CNBP is based, and will collaborate closely with other leading national and international academic and industrial partners. The candidate is expected to be highly motivated by problem-solving research (applied sciences) leading to the solutions to the key problems in the field.
Position 1 – Research Fellow in Non-invasive Molecular Sensing Technologies/ Quantitative High Content Imaging
The successful appointee will apply non-invasive, molecularly sensitive hyperspectral imaging to identify signatures of cellular senescence at a single cell level, and to unravel links between NAD+, metabolic regulation and longevity in adult stem cells. Working in partnership with a leading Australian stem cell expert, Professor Stan Gronthos from the University of Adelaide, the candidate will conduct biological and advanced imaging experiments, cell cultures and flow cytometry/ laser scanning microscopy studies and cell-surface labelling.
This position requires advanced training in bioengineering, biology or biotechnology (if carried out in a technology-rich environment), or advanced microscopies (FLIM, SHG, superresolution) and similar. This role will require understanding of fluorescence including in biological settings, and the ability to carry out biological imaging and biological characterisation experiments under supervision as well as interpreting the results. Demonstrated quantitative skills are essential, especially for candidates with biology training. Computer programming skills (in Matlab or Java) will be an advantage. Statistics skills will also be required.
Position 2 – Research Fellow in Nanoscale Analysis
The successful appointee will lead the program to develop novel assays and assay platforms for key analytes of significance for CNBP. Working with other CNBP investigators and external industry partners, the successful candidate will develop new assays combined with new devices for reading out the assay signals, develop and adapt assay chemistry and apply the novel assays to key problems of significance within CNBP. Work will have a strong component of analytical chemistry and nanobiotechnology but also some elements of instrumentation development. A holistic approach to chemical analysis through a tight connection to real biological problems and access to clinical samples within CNBP will offer this appointee a competitive advantage.
This role will require advanced training in Chemistry and the ability or willingness to engage in highly interdisciplinary research outside of chemistry.

- Undergraduate and/or Master/Diploma degree training in one of the disciplines relevant to Centre activities
- Exposure to other disciplines or willingness to cross discipline boundaries
- Publication record in leading research journals commensurate with experience
- Demonstrated ability to use applied sciences to solve problems
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- The ability to work independently and as a member of a broader team, including with PhD students

- Salary Package: from $88,420 - $94,760 per annum (Level A), plus 9.5% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading.
