Job Description

Boston University’s Office of the General Counsel is responsible for all legal matters affecting the University.  Its staff of attorneys provides high quality strategic legal advice and representation to the University’s trustees, executive officers, faculty, and academic and administrative units to help them achieve their goals. The Office is currently seeking a transactional attorney whose practice has included legal support for academic research to join its team.

Key responsibilities will include support for the University’s exciting and diverse research enterprise, including public and privately- sponsored medical and non-medical research both in the U.S. and abroad, academic collaborations and exchanges. The attorney will advise the University’s School of Medicine and other academic and administrative units on a variety of business transactions, regulatory compliance, and general academic matters.

Required Skills

Juris Doctor Degree from an ABA-accredited law school. Licensed or eligible for immediate licensure to practice law in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Excellent academic credentials and a minimum of five years' experience in a high-quality legal practice, superior written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, familiarity with legal issues affecting large research universities, the willingness to handle a wide variety of legal matters both independently and as part of a team and the ability to translate complex problems into practical solutions.  

Expertise in handling complex regulatory, intellectual property, privacy, and other issues arising out of sponsored and collaborative research, including regulation of human subject research, financial conflicts of interest and access to research data and materials, as well as significant experience in drafting and negotiating contracts for a variety of general business transactions. Prior experience advising faculty and administrators at a university or academic medical center strongly preferred.
