Local Engagement Officer and Event Coordinator in the International Relations Sector (IR), Education, Communications and Outreach Group (ECO), Visitors and Local Engagement Section (VI).

  • You will join the International Relations Sector (IR), Education, Communications and Outreach Group (ECO) that is responsible for generating public engagement in science, producing and distributing information on CERN's activities, fostering community building and maintaining support for CERN's mission.
  • The group is composed of professionals covering all its activities: writers, press officers, graphic designers, web designers, social media specialists, education specialists, exhibition designers, photographers, video editors, event organisers.
  • You will join the Visits and Local Engagement section (VI), which is responsible for welcoming external visitors to CERN on guided tours, the permanent exhibitions, the CERN Shop, conferences, public and private events as well as informing the local community and organising events in the local area around CERN.


As Local Engagement Officer, you will be responsible for:

  • Planning, developing and evaluating a public engagement programme for the local community, developing activities within the areas of education, tourism and public events.
  • Producing content for and maintaining the Neighbours/Voisins website.
  • Coordinating local communication and engagement for large-scale CERN outreach events, such as Open Days, within larger teams set up specifically for the events.

As Globe Event Coordinator, you will also be responsible for the planning, coordination, and organisation of private and public events in the Globe of Science and Innovation (about 100 events per year). This will entail working with the section leader to handle all requests for events in the Globe and act as the main liaison between the event organizers and other stakeholders (Globe Foundation, technical support, CERN visits service, legal service, external suppliers, access).


Master's degree in the field of Public Relations, Communications/Science Communication, or equivalent.

Experience and competencies

The experience required for this post is:

  • Proven experience in planning and running science communication projects with children, schools, families, adults.
  • Proven experience in event organisation.

The following experience would be an advantage:

  • Knowledge of CERN and its communication strategy.
  • Experience in management of a science centre or museum shop.

The technical competencies required for this post are:

  • Conference, workshop & event organisation.
  • Project management: managing relations and partnerships with non-profit as well as corporate entities.
  • Use of Office software packages: microsoft office (mainly excel).
  • Use of online communication tools: e-mails, Content Management Systems ((CMS) such as SharePoint, Drupal) and social media (Facebook, Twitter) etc.
  • Use of Event Management tool: ticketing, audio visual support.
  • Use of Data Management tool: data extraction, statistics etc.

The behavioural competencies required for this post are:

  • Communicating effectively: ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented; expressing opinions, ideas and suggestions with conviction and in a logical/structured manner; keeping to the point.

The language competencies required are:

  • English and French spoken and written, with the ability to draw-up technical specifications and to make oral presentations.

Note on Employment Conditions

We offer a limited-duration contract for a period of 5 years. Limited-duration contracts shall terminate by default on their date of expiry.

  • Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.
