The Education Portfolio is headed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Education and Vice President who leads the planning and implementation of the University's strategies related to RMIT's academic programs and the RMIT student experience. Students are central to RMIT and the Education portfolio is responsible for achieving excellent experiences and employment outcomes for all RMIT students, no matter where, through which medium and what programs they study. The portfolio has responsibility for all educational programs, ranging from certificates to postgraduate coursework programs which may be delivered through different modes and in international locations. It has responsibility for the provision of learning materials and for administrative and student support services.

The Role and Your Responsibilities

The language and learning skills advisor is primarily responsible for enhancing students' academic language, writing and learning outcomes. The Study and Learning Centre operates in a dynamic, complex and fast-paced environment, with service provision frequently negotiated and prioritized in line with student demand. The successful applicant will work as part of a team to implement a range of support programs that include face to face learning support in drop-in sessions and the development and delivery of orientation, transition, and developmental workshops that are designed to support international and undergraduate students in the development of academic literacies. This role will be mainly based at RMIT's Bundoora campus but will need to travel to other campuses as needed.

  • To support student retention and success through the provision of face to face writing, English and academic literacy support in drop-in and one to one consultations
  • To assist student orientation and transition through the design, development and delivery of workshop programs
  • To support English language development through the planning and implementation of the English Ready workshop series

In addition, the position contributes to a number of projects related to the identification and on-going development of academic skills resources and the collaboration and participation in the SLC community of practice meetings, which provide opportunities to discuss pedagogy and thereby shape the future of teaching and learning best practice.

Skills and Experience Required

The successful candidate will have a degree in English or a postgraduate qualification in TESOL, education/or applied linguistics and/or significant relevant experience in a tertiary environment.

You will also have an ability to develop and deliver effective face-to- face English, writing and academic language and learning support to students from a diverse range of backgrounds and disciplines as well as capability to deliver teaching via a range of media.

Furthermore, you must have a sound knowledge of the tertiary environment, effective organisational and time management skills, and demonstrated ability to work constructively within a team and lead project teams and a high level of verbal and written communication skills.

Appointment to this position is subject to passing a Working with Children check.
