The UK research and innovation funding landscape is about to undergo the most significant reform of the last 50 years.
A new funding body – UK Research and Innovation – will provide overall strategic direction across the nine existing bodies. UK Research and Innovation will represent the sector’s interests globally, and maximise the value of the government’s investment in research and innovation which totals more than £6billion per annum, and will continue to grow through to the end of this Parliament. It will ensure that the research and innovation system across the whole of the UK has the strategic capacity and the agility to maintain our world-leading strength in research and innovation.
The Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy is now looking to appoint UK Research and Innovation’s Chief Finance Officer (CFO). The CFO will be vital to the success of this new organisation. Working closely with the interim Chair, the CEO, the Board (of which they will be a member) and stakeholders across the sector, the CFO will aid in the design and establishment of the new organisation, building vital relationships, developing strategy, and putting the working model for the new system in place. They will shape and lead a globally important, pioneering new organisation.
This is a high-profile role, and we are seeking candidates with the experience and personal characteristics to command credibility. The successful candidate should have a proven track record as the financial and operational leader of a large and complex organisation, and have a personal commitment to the success of UK research and innovation. In order to ensure that the UK Research and Innovation Board is made up of Members with the appropriate level of skills and experience, both UK nationals, and international candidates are encouraged to apply.
Applications are welcome from all, especially women, minority ethnic and disabled candidates who are under-represented at this level in public life. Although this is a full-time role we are open to discussing different flexible working arrangements.
The CFO will: advise on key strategic and operational decisions, in their role as a member of the Board; will be a key part of the executive team, leading on the implementation, introduction and management of the organisation’s financial systems and processes; lead on the design and implementation of the corporate service function; as well as acting as the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the organisation.
