Job Description

Lead an agile team of software developers as part of the Software and Application Innovation Lab (SAIL) at the BU’s Hariri Institute for Computing. Responsibilities include the following: building, deploying, and maintaining online, cloud, and big data prototypes, applications, and software platforms; implementing solutions involving a variety of technologies and techniques (e.g., databases, APIs, web crawlers, interactive data collection and annotation tools, visualizations and multimedia, statistical analyses); assembling budgets, project plans, technical descriptions, and technical publications describing ongoing and completed work; communicating and coordinating with a variety of stakeholders within the research community, and contributing to open source communities; supervising a community of student interns and research assistants; conducting timely performance reviews for software engineers and interns in cooperation with the Director; and interviewing candidates for SAIL software engineer and intern positions. This Senior Software Engineer will participate in additional SAIL projects as needed, including the following: supporting the development of a Smart-city Cloud-based Open Platform and Ecosystem (SCOPE) to expose the digital pulse of the city for innovators to develop smart-city services; working with a variety of faculty investigators and industry and public sector partners in the areas of urban transportation and carbon emissions tracking; overseeing development of a HIPAA-compliant and accessible framework that lays the foundation for future behavioral intervention as well as computerized adaptive testing studies.

Required Skills

Must have Master's degree in information management systems or closely related field and 3 years of experience in software engineering, including experience overseeing a team of software engineers and/or interns. Experience must include the following: programming with Python, PHP, JavaScript/Node.js, shell scripting, Java, C/C++; modern relational database technologies (PostgreSQL, Oracle) and NoSQL (HBase, Redis, MongoDB or Riak); cloud computing services, including AWS (EC2, SimpleDB, SQS) and Azure; building applications for medical community that are compliant with WCAG, Section 508, other accessibility standards, and HIPAA; and drafting budgets and project plans for research proposals, as well as technical reports.
