Research Associate in Glass Micro-Photonics
Macquarie is the university of pioneering minds. Globally recognised as one of Australia's leading research universities, Macquarie is a place where extraordinary new possibilities come to light. We've helped people to hear, introduced wireless internet technology to the world and broken through traditional boundaries by appointing Australia's first female vice-chancellor.
At Macquarie you'll join a vibrant community of diverse perspectives, all working towards a brighter future for our communities and our planet. Surrounded by beautiful parkland campus, our students and staff are free to explore and discover, supported by facilities including a high-tech library, private teaching hospital, gym and pools, childcare facilities, a campus train station and the newly expanded Macquarie Centre shopping complex next door.
In Macquarie's Faculty of Science and Engineering you'll join passionate researchers and educators blazing new trails in the spirit of discovery and exploration. Encouraged to think boldly, and supported by some of Australia's most outstanding facilities, brilliant minds converge in our faculty to create incredible new possibilities: the world's first attempt to synthesize complex life, the creation of Wi-Fi, the discovery of dancing dwarf galaxies, and the development of blue LED light. Inspired by challenge and opportunity, we look forward to welcoming you as we imagine a new future together.
Join us and start seeing the world in a different light.
About the Department
The Department of Physic and Astronomy's MQ Photonics Research Centre brings together a team of researchers with long standing expertise in lasers and optical physics.
The Centre is nationally and internationally recognised for innovation and leadership in lasers and photonics. The focus of the Centre is on fundamental and applied research in the six frontiers of optical science: Photonic sources/ laser applications; Natural & engineered optical materials; Photonics for Life and Health Sciences; Photonics for the environment; Astrophotonics; Quantum photonics – fundamental and applied.
Interests and activities within the MQ Photonics Research Centre provide a rigorous research setting with world class facilities, strong links to industry complemented by a strong cohort of entrepreneurial alumni, and active collaborations with major international research groups in photonics.
The Faculty of Science and Engineering is seeking to appoint a new Research Associate in Glass Micro-Photonics in the MQ Photonics Research Centre.
The successful candidate will work in the MQ Photonics Research Centre and will conduct research on an ARC funded project investigating atomic species migrations in glasses exposed to femtosecond laser radiation. Objectives include improving our understanding of the physical processes controlling femtosecond laser induced refractive index change and developing new approaches to low loss integrated microphotonic chips.
To be considered for this position applications must respond to the selection criteria below and attach as a separate document in the application process.
- A PhD in Physics, Optoelectronics, Engineering, Chemistry or equivalent experience
- Relevant experience using femtosecond lasers to in-volume modify transparent dielectrics
- Experience in glass chemistry
- Experience in optical and electron microscopy
- A track record of written publications and presenting research results at scientific meetings
- A demonstrated track record working both as an independent researcher and in a team based environment
- Postdoctoral research experience or equivalent
- Experience in electron microprobe methodology and analysis
- Experience with Raman spectroscopy and digital holography
