Professor in Psychology and Human Development, and Head of Department

The appointment will be on UCL professorial grade. Salary will be at a level commensurate with the academic standing of the appointee, and will include £2,980 London Allowance per annum plus an annual allowance of £7,500 for the Head of Department role.

The UCL Institute of Education (IOE) is seeking a talented, inclusive and ambitious Head of Department to lead the Department of Psychology and Human Development.

The IOE has been judged the world leader in education across the world for the fourth year running (QS World University rankings, 2017). For REF2014 it was top for research power in education. The Department of Psychology and Human Development is one of six departments in the IOE and is the largest group of psychologists in the UK with research and teaching interests in psychological approaches to learning, development and teaching from early childhood to adulthood and encompassing special and inclusive education. It runs a range of courses, from undergraduate, advanced diploma and master’s courses and research degrees to short courses, focusing principally on the continuing professional development of educators.

The Department’s main research activities are in the areas of:

  • Psychology (particularly in relation to education) and typical development, focusing on classroom practices and their relationship with learning (science, maths, literacy, class size, deployment of teaching assistants, motivation)
  • Educational neuroscience, where we are working in partnership with colleagues in UCL Psychology and Language Sciences and Birkbeck to extend our reach in this developing area
  • Special Educational Needs areas, including autism, emotional disorders, hearing impairment, disorders of perception, language difficulties, learning difficulties, literacy difficulties, numeracy difficulties, visual impairment and youth offending.

Within the department we have Centres in: Autism and Education (CRAE); Education in the Criminal Justice System (CECJS); Educational Neuroscience (CEN); UCL Centre for Inclusive Education (CIE) and Language, Literacy and Numeracy (CLLNR).
