The University of Western Australia (UWA) is a member of Australia's prestigious Group of Eight and ranked among the top 100 universities, with a broad and balanced coverage of disciplines in the arts, sciences and major professions.
About the opportunity
We seek to appoint a high-calibre individual with an outstanding record, relative to opportunity, in the application of single crystal X-ray diffraction to innovative research problems as a joint appointment in the newly formed School of Molecular Sciences and the Centre for Microscopy, Characterisation and Analysis (CMCA) at the University of Western Australia.
About the School and Centre
The School of Molecular Sciences is a research-intensive school that spans the broad disciplines of chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology, and genetics, and incorporates the ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Energy Biology. The School is responsible for the undergraduate teaching and postgraduate research degrees across its broad discipline base within a dynamic, internationally recognised and research-intensive environment. The iconic Bayliss Building on the Crawley campus houses the School, as well as the CMCA's nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray diffraction, and mass spectrometry facilities.
The CMCA is the Western Australian node of the Australian Microscopy & Microanalysis Research Facility, and of the National Imaging Facility, national infrastructure networks of Australian university-based characterisation facilities providing premium analytical capabilities and high-end research support to local, national and international scientists (www.ammrf.org.au and www.anif.org.au). The Centre's X-ray Crystallography Facility presently includes Oxford Diffraction Xcalibur and Gemini diffractometers with Mo and Cu sources and cryostats.
In addition to undertaking an internationally recognised program of independent research, the successful applicant will also manage CMCA's X-ray Crystallography Facility in the Bayliss Building. Duties extend from supervision of the maintenance and operation of the single-crystal diffractometers and training users of the facility, to undertaking research projects involving X-ray crystallography.
The appointee will provide expertise to academic staff and research students in all areas of X-ray crystallography, including diffractometer operation, data acquisition and analysis, and structure solution. The appointee will also engage in the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students as directed by the Head of School and CMCA Director, with teaching load balanced by the needs of managing the Facility. Through this joint appointment we are seeking a person with a strong work ethic, a practical approach and who is passionate about delivering the highest quality research, independently and in collaboration with others, and teaching outcomes.
