Mechanical Engineer in the Experimental Physics (EP) Department, CMS Experiment Systems (CMX) Group, Detector Application (DA) Section.

You will join:

  • The Experimental Physics (EP) Department that carries out basic research in the field of experimental particle physics. It aims at providing a stimulating scientific atmosphere and is an important reference centre for the particle and nuclear physics community at large. It contributes to the education and training of young scientists.

  • The CMS Experiment Systems (CMX) group, in charge of the maintenance, operation and upgrade of the CMS detector and related experimental infrastructure, including safety and technical coordination.

  • The Detector Application (CMX-DA) section, specifically contributing to the operation and maintenance of the CMS sub-detectors, and developing detector technologies and designs for the future upgrades.

As Mechanical Engineer in the CMX-DA Section, you will join a multi-disciplinary team of physicists, engineers and technicians and take a leading role in the development of the mechanical structures for the two major sub-detector upgrades of CMS, in view of the High-Luminosity operation of the LHC: the Tracking System and the End-Cap Calorimeter.

 You will:

  • Participate to the finalization of the design of the Tracker and End-Cap Calorimeter mechanical structures, including service arrangement and cooling system.

  • Coordinate the fabrication of Tracker structure prototypes and mock-ups, and the measurement of their mechanical and thermal performance in dedicated test systems, to validate the designs and the fabrication processes.

  • Perform structural and thermal calculations on the End-Cap Calorimeter structures, to optimize the designs.

  • Play a key role in the integration studies of both sub-detectors.

  • Write up technical specifications and reports.

  • Communicate with other project members at CERN and in collaborating institutes world-wide, as well as with supplier companies.

Master's degree in the field of Mechanical engineering, or equivalent.

Experience and competencies

The experience required for this post is:

  • Demonstrated experience in developing mechanical assemblies with 3D CAD software.

  • Demonstrated experience in performing thermal and structural calculations of complex mechanical structures with finite element analysis.

  • Initial experience in planning and coordinating the fabrication and assembly of mechanical systems.

  • Experience in design and construction of fibre-reinforced composite structures and glued assemblies would be an asset.

  • Experience in design of low temperature cooling systems (down to -40oC) would be an asset.

The technical competencies required for this post are:

  • 3D & 2D technical drawing: proficiency in CATIA V5 or equivalent 3D modelling software, good knowledge of drawing annotations.
  • Mechanical analysis & modelling: proficiency in ansys would be a strong asset.
  • Precision assembly and construction: knowledge of usual manufacturing methods (milling, turning, etc.) and assembly methods (bolting, gluing, welding etc.).
  • Precision assembly and construction: knowledge of quality control methods (dimensional and geometrical measurements).
  • Mechanical systems integration: capability to develop and validate manufacturing and installation methods.

The behavioural competencies required for this post are:

  • Managing self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting.
  • Demonstrating flexibility: actively participating in the implementation of new processes and technologies; demonstrating openness to new ideas and situations; being willing to work on different projects simultaneously.
  • Solving problems: identifying, defining and assessing problems, taking action to address them; finding the information needed to solve problems; making objective judgments based on all the facts available; producing workable and timely solutions that meet requirements.
  • Working in teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities.

The language competencies required are:

  • Fluent spoken and written English. Ability to make oral presentations and to draw up technical specifications and scientific reports.

  • Ability to understand and speak French in professional context would be an asset.
