The Department of Applied Finance and Actuarial Studies

The Department of Applied Finance and Actuarial Studies, within the Faculty of Business and Economics, delivers internationally recognised and accredited programmes. These include the Bachelor of Applied Finance as a flagship programme where discipline units prepare students for different career paths in finance, including financial management, investment and retail banking, financial markets, funds management, corporate treasury, risk management and financial regulation. Programmes also include the Masters of Applied Finance recognised as the leading programme of its type in the world, and the prestigious Bachelor of Actuarial Studies, the most established professionally accredited Actuarial Studies degree in the world. Our graduates are sought after by domestic and international blue chip companies and the financial industry, and many of them hold senior positions in universities and academia.

In the most recent Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) report, Macquarie University was rated 'at world standard' in the 'Banking, Finance and Investment' field, ranking Macquarie clearly within the top ten Australian research universities in the area. As part of its strategic plan the university seeks to further develop and improve its capacity in the area of finance. In particular, we aim to recruit in the fields of asset pricing, corporate finance and in emerging areas including climate finance or finance technology.

The Roles

The Department is currently seeking to appoint two new academics who have scholarly expertise in Finance. These two appointments will be at the level of Senior Lecturer (Level C) and/or Associate Professor (Level D). Successful applicants will be expected to make a strong contribution to research, coordinate and teach undergraduate and postgraduate units in Finance, supervise research students and make a positive contribution to the reputation and administration of the Department, Faculty and University.

Selection Criteria

To be considered for these positions applicants must apply at either Senior Lecturer (Level C) or Associate Professor (Level D) and respond to the appropriate set of selection criteria below:

Selection Criteria (Essential) for Senior Lecturer (Level C)

  • A PhD in finance or a closely-related discipline
  • A well-articulated research agenda and a track record of publications in the highest quality domestic and international journals
  • A demonstrated ability to attract external funding for research
  • Capacity to supervise Masters and/or PhD research students
  • Capacity to independently conduct lectures, tutorials, assessments and exam marking across many areas of finance
  • Demonstrated academic knowledge in the discipline and a committed evidence of ability to deliver high quality learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level
  • Excellent communication skills, with an ability to relate to and engage with other staff and students from all backgrounds and to represent the Department to external stakeholders and the general public
  • Demonstrated experience to make a contribution to the academic life and administrative tasks of the Department and Faculty along with a track record of effective team work

Selection Criteria (Desirable) for Senior Lecturer (Level C)

  • Experience and interest in interdisciplinary research
  • Experience in the development and ongoing partnerships with industry and professional bodies

Selection Criteria (Essential) for Associate Professor (Level D)

  • A PhD in finance or a closely-related discipline
  • Outstanding contributions to scholarship and research in the discipline as evidenced by ongoing publications in top tier journals
  • Recognition as an authority in the discipline with a national and international reputation in research
  • Proven ability to attract industry funding or competitive grant funding and a record of competitive grant success
  • Leadership skills and experience in supervising Masters and/or PhD research students and in mentoring staff members
  • Capacity to independently conduct lectures, tutorials, assessments and exam marking across many areas of finance and a record of innovation in this area
  • Distinguished record of high quality teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • Excellent communication skills, with an ability to relate to and engage with other staff and students from all backgrounds and to represent the Department to external stakeholders and the general public
  • Demonstrated experience to make a contribution to the academic life and administrative tasks of the Department and Faculty along with a track record of effective team work
  • Demonstrated willingness to undertake management responsibility at a senior level in the Department, and to contribute at the Faculty and the University level

Selection Criteria (Desirable) for Associate Professor (Level D)

  • Experience and interest in interdisciplinary research
  • Experience in the development and ongoing partnerships with industry and professional bodies.

Salary Package for Senior Lecturer (Level C): from $121,953 to $140,246 p.a (Level C), plus 17% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading. A salary loading may be negotiated with the successful candidate(s).

Salary Package for Associate Professor (Level D): from $146,462 to $161,099 p.a (Level D), plus 17% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading. A salary loading may be negotiated with the successful candidate(s).
