Job Summary

A research technician position is available in the Sarkis Mazmanian laboratory studying the role of the gut microbiome in mouse models of Parkinson’s disease. Seeking a self-motivated candidate, who is excited to learn not only new laboratory techniques, but also contribute to the lab’s broader scientific goals.

Job Duties

Work independently in an active wet-lab environment and performing responsibilities including:

  • Rodent husbandry and animal strain maintenance, including genotyping
  • Rodent behavioral testing
  • Basic bacterial culture
  • Standard molecular biology assays, such as PCR, qPCR, ELISA, and Western blotting
  • Maintain general laboratory environment, such as media and buffer stocks
  • Other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of one year of laboratory experience in a research lab, beyond laboratory coursework
  • Experience with basic laboratory techniques and equipment (e.g. pipetting, centrifugation, solutions)
  • Experience in rodent handling, and the ability to work with live rodents and perform animal tissue harvesting
  • Ability to follow direction and lab protocols
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs of laboratory supplies and equipment as needed
  • Ability to work interactively in a group setting
  • High self-motivation and initiative

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, microbiology, immunology, or neuroscience
  • Laboratory experience in molecular biology techniques (cloning, western blotting, ELISA, qPCR) and ability to generate experimental protocols in these and related areas
  • Experience with mouse models of behavior
