Accelerator Physicist in the Beams Department (BE), Accelerator and Beam Physics Group (ABP), Lepton Accelerators and Test Facilities Section (LAT).

You will join:

  • The Beams (BE) Department is at the heart of the CERN accelerator complex and hosts the groups responsible for the beam generation, acceleration, diagnostics, controls and performance optimization.
  • The Accelerators and Beam Physics (ABP) Group is responsible for beam performance from the source to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and carries out Research & Development (R&D) activities on the upgrade of the LHC, its injectors, and future colliders (CLIC and FCC).
  • The Lepton Accelerators and Test Facilities (LAT) Section is responsible for theoretical, numerical and experimental studies on the beam dynamics of future CERN linear and circular lepton accelerators and colliders and for the study and improvement of electron cooling of existing and future CERN accelerators (e.g. AD (, ELENA (, LEIR ( Beam cooling techniques are fundamental in order to reach the required beam performance in existing machines at CERN and may cover a fundamental role also in future accelerators. A deep theoretical knowledge of such techniques, the capability to perform simulations and develop a precise model and a good understanding of the cooling process through dedicated measurements in the CERN accelerators are required in order to assess the present performance limitations and identify the optimum parameter space for operation.

As Accelerator Physicist in the LAT Section, you will set-up and improve the performances of the electron beam cooling of circulating hadron beams in the CERN accelerator complex (in particular in LEIR, AD and ELENA).

Specific tasks will include:

  • Development and validation of particle beam simulation codes to accurately model the ion cooling process.
  • Study  the impact of the cooling on beam parameters by analytical models and simulations.
  • Conception and execution of beam measurements to corroborate such modelling and improve it.

After a period of familiarization you will:

  • Contribute to the improvement of the performance of the cooling systems of LEIR, AD, ELENA and the performance of these accelerators in general.

Master's degree, preferably PhD, in the field of physics or engineering, or equivalent.
