Interested in hunting facts, exposing fake news and being a part of the public policy conversation? RMIT ABC Fact Check, an exciting new collaboration between the university and the national broadcaster, invites applications from experienced researchers and journalists to join Australia's most successful team of fact checkers dedicated to investigating the accuracy of claims made by politicians, lobby groups and prominent individuals attempting to shape public policy.
Successful applicants must be able to produce, at short notice, well-written in-depth research on a wide range of issues for publication across ABC media platforms. The researcher will write clear concise research briefs and undertake complex data research; possess a sound news judgment and a thorough knowledge of current affairs; and adhere to the highest standards of accuracy and integrity in gathering, analyzing and compiling research briefs. The role requires monitoring multi-media platforms, including social and online media, for fact check material; and develops and fosters a strong network of contacts and sources in politics, business, law enforcement, science and medicine etc. The researcher will adopt a flexible, collaborative approach within the team; and actively model and promote RMIT and ABC values and follow all relevant policies and guidelines including ABC editorial policies, Equity and Diversity and Work and Health and Safety.
It is highly desirable you have experience working as a researcher writer, with substantial research skills in finance and data analysis. A thorough knowledge of the workings of government, State and Federal budgets, institutions and business is desirable; sound organizational, planning, problem solving and communications skills; and ability to be a good team player able to work collaboratively in a dynamic fast paced environment under pressure of multiple deadlines. You will be able to develop proficiency in multimedia editing, production systems for publishing online content; and be familiar with resource facilities, libraries, Internet systems, business and financial records.
