Position Summary

The postdoctoral fellow will manage and perform research associated with a USA NIFA funded project focused on the role of rapid evolution in the biological control of Tamarix. The postdoctoral fellow will collaborate on design, and will conduct, analyze and interpret results from experiments focused on understanding the evolution of dispersal and host specificity in introduced biological control agents. The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to communicate the findings at professional meetings and with publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Basic research skills needed include knowledge of experimental design, data management, and statistics. Being comfortable rearing insects and working in the field and in the laboratory is crucial.

Required Job Qualifications

A PhD in entomology, ecology or evolutionary biology by start date. Targeted start date summer 2017.
Experience with plant-insect interactions or ecological genetics.
Must be eligible to work in the United States by proposed start date. The Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management will not sponsor a visa.

Preferred Job Qualifications

Evidence of publications demonstrating relevant expertise published in peer reviewed journals.
Strong quantitative skills.
Strong background in evolutionary biology.

  • Developing, designing and conducting experiments, analyzing data, writing manuscripts in consultation and collaboration with Hufbauer and Bitume.
  • Conducting the research.
  • Writing out experimental and sampling plans, meeting to discuss those plans, and adapting them as necessary. Operating a vehicle as necessary to reach field sites.
  • Collecting data.
  • These duties are important as they will help ensure that we our experiments and other work leads to data that addresses our questions directly.
