The HH Wills Physics Laboratory is looking to recruit an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual to join its engineering workshop team based in a purpose built, well equipped facility.

Working alongside technical staff and academic researchers you will support the School of Physics’ experimental research and teaching activities and work on a wide range of tasks including developing, producing and testing often one-off, innovative pieces of equipment or modifying existing equipment to enhance the original design. You will provide technical support to students and academic and research staff and help in developing new projects offering design ideas or solutions where possible.

Key tasks will include general engineering such as milling, lathe work and basic welding. Depending on experience, further training may be provided in specialist welding, tool-making, CNC machines and computer controlled water jet cutting.

The ideal candidate will be an apprentice-served tool maker or tool-room machinist with a sound practical working knowledge of milling, grinding, turning and other machine shop processes. You will be able to think laterally and should be willing to learn new techniques in order to build complex and innovative equipment from conceptual ideas. You should be able to work from drawings or basic concept designs and be able to produce finished products without drawings.
