The department of Forest Biomaterials and Technology is looking for an associate senior lecturer specializing in wood material science and engineering with focus on determination of material properties.

Subject area:

The department of Forest Biomaterials and Technology (SBT) has about 40 employees and a turnover of approximately 40 million SEK annually. We are a part of the Faculty of Forest Sciences, based in Umeå. The department carries out high quality research and under- and postgraduate education on a high international level and collaborates with the society and industry to develop a bio-based economy where forest biomaterials are an important resource. The focus is on value chains in the bio-based industry, where different components of forest biomaterials are collected, characterized, separated, modified / processed, used and re-used cost-effectively for different purposes while forest ecosystem services are managed sustainably.


Innovative development of sustainable products and services based on forest biomaterials is of high priority. A cornerstone of this development is the understanding of how to create values in different value chains. In this position focus will be on developing methods for determination of properties and values of forest biomaterial at harvest, storage, handling and transport of forest biomaterials for use in sawmills, pulp and paper mills, heat and power industry and in future biorefineries. Applicants are expected to within these areas carry out teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level equivalent to 30% of the employment time. Generally, participating in ongoing projects, to initiate, plan and lead their own research, writing scientific articles, teaching and supervising students, as well as undertake some administrative tasks for the department will be the main tasks of this position. Other important tasks is to work together with industry and society and to continuously apply for funding. The assistant lecturer is supposed to receive educational training, and is expected to achieve the requirements for promotion to senior lecturer during the four years duration of this position.


To be eligible for the position of Associate Senior Lecturer a doctoral degree, or equivalent scientific competence, is required. Persons who have a doctoral degree not older than seven years, before the application period expires, are prioritized. Scientific skills within the subject area are the main criteria for employment. Experience from another research group outside of SLU, equivalent to a postdoctoral position or a doctoral degree from another university, is expected.

Good ability to communicate in English is a requirement. Experience in teaching and of applying and receiving external research grants are merits.

Assessment criteria:

On consideration for appointment as Associate Senior Lecturer emphasis is primarily put on qualitative indicators of the applicant´s academic skills. Furthermore, the assessment includes evaluating the applicant´s ability to develop an independent line of research within the subject area and to meet the requirements for promotion to Senior Lecturer in the context of the employment qualifications.

An important criterion is also the applicant's contacts with and the ability to network with people in the industry. The applicant must also have good forestry understanding. The Department will in this recruitment, in addition to a proven track record, also after an overall assessment of skills and qualifications, make a judgement of who is most suitable to carry out and develop the work and contribute to a positive development of the activities within the field.

Form of employment: The employment period is limited to 4 years according to the Act of higher education (Högskoleförordningen). The employment is the first step in the academic career at SLU. An Associate Senior Lecturer has the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer during the employment period.
