About the university

The University of Gävle has approximately 14 500 students and more than 50 study programmes and second-cycle programmes. 500 courses are offered in the fields of Humanities, Social and Natural Sciences and Technology.

Built Environment and Health-promoting Working Life are the overarching research profiles of the University of Gävle. Fields of excellence are, for instance, Spatial Planning with a specialisation in sustainable built environment and Musculoskeletal Disorders which aims to prevent work-related injuries.

In 2010, the University of Gävle received permission to carry out third-cycle programmes in the profile area of Built Environment and in 2012 Health-promoting Working Life received this permission.

Job description

The University of Gävle (HiG) is seeking a PhD student in industrial engineering and management, with a focus on organisational sustainability. The employment is fulltime, 80 % research and 20 % teaching and other duties, during a period of five years. It will be effective as soon as possible. The employment will be linked to research at CLIP – Centre for Logistics and Innovative Production. The position will be located in Gävle. Regarding employment and doctoral studies see Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5 and 9.

The position includes research and teaching with a focus on organisational sustainability. The research comprises the study of economic, environmental and social issues, focussing particularly on managerial approaches to sustainability, i.e. strategic and organisational, of the primary/heavy industry and the distribution of their products. This includes making organisations (e.g. companies, universities, and public sector organisations) better embed sustainability into their systems, as well as their relation to stakeholders. This further contains, but is not limited to, initiatives, approaches, tools, and organisational change management. The objective is to develop tools, methods, and theory that contribute to make individual industries more sustainable and improve the collaboration between industries.

The teaching duties may include lectures, exercises and tutorials in courses and course modules in the field of organisational and corporate sustainability, as well as in the broader fields of sustainable supply chain and logistics, and industrial engineering and management. The teaching includes supervision of theses and development of courses and examination forms. Teaching is held in Swedish and English.

Qualification requirements

The position requires master’s degree in Industrial engineering and management or equivalent.

Eligible applicants must demonstrate that she/he has knowledge about sustainability issues, such as corporate social responsibility, corporate sustainability and sustainable supply chains. Knowledge about strategic management/business models, organisational change management, industrial ecology, and logistics is beneficial.
Own research and professional experiences in this field of research is particularly meritorious.
Teaching experience within sustainability is a plus.
The candidate must be proficient in English and preferably have a good understanding of Swedish.
