Multiple opportunities exist for students wishing to pursue a doctoral degree in the area of cancer, with a focus on tumour immunology, with the newly established Immune Profiling and Cancer group at Mater Research. Student will be based at the Translational Research Institute (TRI), Australia's first translational medical research institute dedicated to translating scientific discoveries into applications for medical practice.
Mater Research is a world-class medical research institute based in South Brisbane, Australia. Mater Research has had a presence at Mater hospitals for many years, first established in 1998. Now with more than 300 laboratory and clinical researchers, Mater Research has expanded its reach across Mater's hospital and health services, and is an internationally recognised leader in medical research.
Mater Research is a founding partner of the Translational Research Institute (TRI), working together with The University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology's Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation, and the Princess Alexandra Hospital's Centres for Health Research to build a world-class facility supporting medical research and its translation into clinical practice.
Mater Research and The University of Queensland formalised a longstanding relationship to form the Mater Research Institute – The University if Queensland (MRI-UQ), a collaborative alliance between the two leading institutions working together to achieve the best possible research discoveries in health.
Mater Research's areas of focus have expanded but the depth of exploration and commitment to conducting outstanding research remains. Our key areas of focus are:
- Mothers', babies' and women's health
- Cancer biology and care
- Neurosciences and cognitive health
- Chronic disease biology and care
- Optimising acute care
Prospective applicants will have a strong interest in clinical research in the field of tumour immunology, particularly in patient's humoral immune responses to tumours. The successful applicant will belong to a highly productive multidisciplinary research environment that utilises state-of the art approaches to investigate cancer-immunity interactions. This doctoral training will be an ideal opportunity for both domestic and international medical and nonmedical graduates from related life science fields (e.g.: health science, biotechnology, immunology, biochemistry, pathology) who are planning for an academic and/or clinical research career. Although experience in tumour immunology and immunochemistry and/or clinical data analysis is desirable, it is not essential and appropriate training and supervision will be provided to the successful candidate.
Prospective applicants must meet the following entry requirements:
- Applicants should possess a bachelor with honours or master's, or equivalent degree, concentrating in a life science related degree, with distinguished academic records and relevant research experience.
- Applicants should be able to demonstrate the ability to understand and develop skills in clinical research methodology and biostatistics
- Applicants should have excellent scientific writing skills and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary, international research team
- Applicants should be able to enrol full-time in the doctoral training program
Careful consideration will be given to letters of recommendation from faculty members or research mentors who have close first-hand knowledge of the applicants academic and research abilities.
The base stipend will be at the of A$26,288 (this rate is equivalent to the standard UQ scholarship rate, 2017 rate, indexed annually) per annum tax-free for three years with the possibility of a six month extension in approved circumstances, and is subject to the https://graduate-school.uq.edu.au/scholarships . The successful applicants both domestic and international will subsequently be encouraged to apply for UQ Graduate School Scholarships. Applicants with external scholarships will further qualify to apply for the Mater Research's generous top-up scholarship schemes worth an additional A$5,000 per annum.
