The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is a government-funded tertiary institution in Hong Kong.  It offers programmes at various levels including Doctorate, Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees.  It has a full-time academic staff strength of around 1,300.  The total consolidated expenditure budget of the University is close to HK$7 billion (US$900 million) per year. 
 
DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING

Associate Professor / Assistant Professor in Geotechnical Engineering

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering enjoys a high reputation in conducting application-oriented research and has well established connections with industry partners and government agencies in Hong Kong.  It offers academic programmes at various levels, including MPhil degree and PhD degree in the disciplines of Construction and Transportation Engineering, Environmental Engineering Science, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, and Structural Engineering. The Department currently has about 40 faculty members and 36 technical and administrative personnel, and is committed to the international standards of excellence in teaching and research. The appointee will be required to (a) teach relevant undergraduate and postgraduate subjects, such as Soil Mechanics, Foundation Engineering, Rock Engineering, Advanced Geotechnical Design, and Soil Behaviour and Geotechnical Engineering; (b) supervise student projects and theses; (c) initiate, lead and participate in research activities; and (d) undertake relevant administrative duties, including programme leadership, curriculum development, programme validation and accreditation, etc.

Applicants should (a) have a PhD degree in Geotechnical Engineering or equivalent fields; (b) have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and research; (c) have a good record of research, publications and scholarship; (d) be able to demonstrate effective classroom teaching skills and have good interpersonal skills; and (e) possess research interest in, but not limited to, one or more of the following areas: (i) Numerical Analysis; (ii) Slope Stabilization; (iii) Pile Foundation; (iv) Deep Excavation; (v) Debris Flow; (vi) Soil-Structure Interaction; (vii) Geomechanics; (viii) Lab and physical model test study; and (ix) Instrumentation.    Preference will be given to those with a good undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering and practical working experience in geotechnical design. Relevant professional qualifications and working experience as a civil engineer or geotechnical engineer will be an asset.

Remuneration and Conditions of Service
