The appointment is for a term of 4 years, with duties equivalent to 25 %, or 3 years without duties. Duty work, if relevant for a candidate, will primarily be related to support of education tasks. This is a researcher training position aimed at providing promising future researchers the opportunity of academic development in the form of a doctoral degree. The position is located to the Department of computer science (IDI).

Information about the department

The department currently has 28 full time professors and 60 associate professors. In addition, we have 19 adjunct professors, 37 post doctors and 22 technical/ administrative personnel. We have about 65 active ph.d. students. Five women are among the faculty and nine faculty originate from counties other than Norway. Research at the department is organized in groups. Centre for research based innovation (SFI) Sirius

The Centre for research-based innovation (SFI) Sirius is funded by the Research council of Norway (NFR). Sirius is lead from the University of Oslo with NTNU as partner together with a consortium of external business partners. See more information Sirius is to establish research based knowledge on Big data based principles applied to challenging problems within oil and gas. Oil and gas, not the least in high-cost countries like Norway, is an increasingly information intensive industry.

Sirius is an interdisciplinary, international research center leaning on a set of technological resources including semantic technologies, cloud based solution, high-performance computing and natural language technologies.


The ph.d. candidate is to work within the area of Work practices in Sirius. The aim is to understand the conditions and consequences of digitalization of work practices. The focus is to unravel the challenges and possibilities throughout the process of implementation: from a prototype to a tool in routine use. This involves deep insight into the sociotechnical conditions for the implementation process including the organization of work into silos given by professional, geographical or business area boundaries.

The ph.d. candidate is to contribute to and participate in a project team at IDI working with prototype based development and empirical evaluation of Big data techniques, methods and tools within oil and gas, with the aim of scientific publication in renowned journals and conferences.


The candidate needs experience in qualitative, empirical studies and to demonstrate sound grasp of the sociotechnical interplay involved in digitalization of work practices.

It is a marked advantage to master a Scandinavian language as a significant part of the empirical data collection is from activities that originate in Norwegian.

A master’s degree in Information Systems or similar is required – average grade B or better as measured in ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) grades, or an education at the equivalent level.

Applicants who do not master a Scandinavian language must provide evidence of good English language skills, written and spoken. The following tests can be used as such documentation: TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are:

  • TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test),
  • IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted),
  • CAE/CPE: grade B or A.

In extraordinary circumstances, formal documentation of language skills can be relinquished. In such cases, the candidate’s language skills will be assessed in a personal interview.

Knowledge of and insight into the oil and gas business is a marked advantage.

The candidate is required to submit a project proposal (5 – 10 pages) with the application. This project proposal is to demonstrate the theoretical and methodological approach of the candidate to problem areas related to Work practices in Sirius.

The project proposal is crucial in the evaluation of the applicants, in addition to education, publications and qualifications. Also abilities to communicate and collaborate is emphasized.

Salary conditions

The position is in code 1017 Stipendiat salary grade 50-62 in the Norwegian State salary scale, and typically in salary grade 50-57, gross NOK 435 100 – 488 900 per year, depending on qualifications. A deduction of 2 % is made as a statutory contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
