PhD scholarship in Safety, autonomy, remote control and operations of industrial transport systems – (SAREPTA)
The Department of Product Design in collaboration with SINTEF Safety is offering a PhD-scholarship in a project funded by the Norwegian Science Foundation (NFR). The project is Safety, autonomy, remote control and operations of industrial transport systems – (SAREPTA), and has received funding for the period 2017 to 2020.
The PhD Scholarship is for a period of 3 years, with a planned startup in May, 2017.
The Department of Design consists of two, about equally sized groups: one on Gløshaugen campus in Trondheim, and one at NTNU in Gjøvik. The department is engaged in research and education in the areas of industrial design, interaction design, strategic design, sustainable design, graphic design and media technology and management. Important application areas are within the health and welfare sector and the maritime industry.
Research on autonomy and safety in transport (i.e. shipping) has been prioritized both by the Department of Design, SINTEF Safety, and the SAREPTA project. The key objective of SAREPTA is to provide necessary knowledge for the development of improved methods for risk assessments and mitigation in transport systems that are autonomous, remotely controlled and/or periodically unmanned. This knowledge is not available today and it is critical for safe operations. A key issue is the interface between autonomous systems and human users and operators.
The PhD candidate will work on:
Risk identification and risk levels Infrastructure vulnerabilities and threats Technical, human and operational barriers to mitigate autonomous system risks Organisational and human factors, as well as regulatory measures for risk mitigation The SAREPTA project has received strong support from authorities and industries in Norway. The common perception has been that autonomous systems will be a key part of future transport and that there is a strong need to establish a more systematic understanding of hazards and risks in order to establish design guidelines, testing regimes and regulations.
NTNU and SINTEF wish to get in contact with qualified candidates for this PhD position. Applicants for this position must have a master degree in a relevant field such as (but not limited to) interaction design, industrial safety and reliability, risk analysis and/or human factors. Candidates with relevant experience from research and/or industry, with an existing network within industrial safety, practice from working on safety and good networking skills, will be prioritized.
Candidates who are fluent in speaking and writing Norwegian are of specific interest, given the nature of the project. They should have the ability to build and sustain a network among interested users, to further research, innovation, and the safe and resilient use of autonomous transportation systems in Norway.

Conditions of appointment:
PhD Candidate is remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at wage level 50, There will be 2% deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.
Engagement as a PhD candidate is done in accordance with “Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident”, given by the Ministry of Education and Research of 19.07.2010. The goal of the announced position is to obtain a PhD degree. The applicant will engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants. The positions adhere to the Norwegian Government's policy of balanced ethnicity, age and gender. The application must contain information of educational background and prior training, exams, and work experience. Certified copies of academic diplomas and transcripts, English language test scores and documents must be attached. It is a prerequisite that the PhD scholar applies for, and is granted, admission to the NTNU PhD program as soon as possible after employment.
PhD admission requires a Master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies.
Publications and any other work which the applicant wishes to be taken into account must be enclosed. Joint works will be considered provided that a short summary outlining the applicant's contributions is attached. Incomplete applications will not be taken into consideration.
