Description of Work Unit
To educate the next generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community every day. The Small Animal Surgery unit is an integral part of the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital which provides state-of-the-art surgery and anesthesia to critically ill or injured domestic, wildlife, and exotic animals. The unit instructs PVM students, technicians, interns, and residents.
This position provides PRN (relief nursing) to cover annual, sick, holiday, after-hours, and weekends etc to various departments during critical peak times. This includes assisting in the instruction of PVM students, interns, residents, faculty and staff performing diagnostic procedures, therapeutic treatments, client communication, service coordination, and overseeing client-student interactions. This position provides flexibility with the veterinary technology demands of the VTH and PVM program.
To be considered for this position, applicants must have:
- An Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in veterinary / animal health technology or science. A transcript must be attached with this application to confirm this requirement is met.
- 2 full-time years (24 months) of experience as a veterinary generalist with experience in areas such as animal surgery, administering anesthesia to animals.
- Two years of experience as defined by the department will substitute for each year of required education.
- A bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from an accredited college or university in veterinary/animal health technology will substitute for the associate’s degree and, at the agency’s discretion, the two years of experience. A transcript must be attached with the application to use this substitution.
Highly sought applicants will have:
- Graduated from a Certified Veterinary Technician program or Licensed Veterinary Technician program.

Essential Job Duties

- Supports various hospital services with technical duties.
- Assist or performs medical techniques on veterinary patients.
- Supports small animal services by performing medical and minor techniques on veterinary patients, such as venapuncture, IV catheterization, fluid administration, electro diagnostic procedures, blood pressure doppler measurements, abdominocentesis, cystocentesis, bandage changes, wound management therapeutic management and diagnostic sample submission.

- Manage and answer the various consult phone lines.
- Give information to potential referral clients. This requires a strong understanding of variety of procedures, medical terminology, and triaging cases based on medical needs.
- Explain medical conditions and the procedures we perform to help pets.
- Schedule appointments.
- Collect information for financial estimates.
- Help owners with planning and arranging the hospital visit.
- Gather answers for client questions regarding their pet.
- Work closely with other departments required to organize daily procedures and how the patient flows through the hospital.
