Information about the department
The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MTP) has broad interdisciplinary expertise in the fields of logistics, machine design, product development, materials science, risk and reliability of complex systems. The research at the department focuses on development, optimization and improvement of industrial processes and production systems. One of our goals is to secure the Norwegian industry and administration with access to knowledge and expertise on an international level. This PHD is in the framework of a cotutelle agreement with University of Technology of Troyes (France). The candidate will have the opportunity to spend 30% of the PHD duration in France and will get a PHD from both NTNU and University of Technology of Troyes.
The primary objective of the PhD candidate will be to study, develop and demonstrate quantitative models for prognosis and maintenance optimization of critical infrastructures. The research project involves theoretical and methodological developments, with a focus on stochastic and statistical approaches: stochastic degradation modeling, maintenance cost assessment with Mont Carlo simulation, parametric or non-parametric estimation for the proposed models.  The candidate will have to take into account strong constraints related to limited access to data: current data bases available for critical infrastructures are characterized by a mixture of qualitative and quantitative information, important problems of censoring, incompleteness, and pollution by maintenance actions. Beyond the development of innovative modeling and estimation techniques, the candidate will have to demonstrate the value of information for decision making in some precise application cases and to quantify uncertainties. This project will be led in strong collaboration with the Norwegian road administration (Statens Vegvesen).
The position is awarded for a period of 4 years.

A master's degree with an average grade B or better as measured in ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) grades, or an education at the equivalent level is required. Students who are currently in their last semester of Master degree are eligible. Masters in Reliability, Applied Mathematics (Probability and Statistics) and Civil engineering (with strong interest for stochastic modeling) are welcome. Programming and modeling skills are welcome.
Applicants who do not master a Scandinavian language must provide evidence of good English language skills, written and spoken. The following tests can be used as such documentation: TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are:
• TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test),
• IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted),
• CAE/CPE: grade B or A.
In extraordinary circumstances, formal documentation of language skills can be relinquished. In such cases the candidate’s language skills will be assessed in a personal interview.

PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross NOK 432.200 before tax. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.
Engagement as a PhD Candidate is done in accordance with “Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident”, given by the Ministry of Education and Research of 19.07.2010. The goal of the positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants will engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement. The appointment is subject to the conditions in effect at any time for employees in the public sector.
