The Inorganic Materials and Ceramics Research Group at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, NTNU, invites applications for a postdoctoral research position focusing on functional magnetic nanostructures. The postdoctoral position is part of our research program Novel topological spin textures for low-energy spintronics financed by The Research Council of Norway. Using state-of-the-art magnetic force microscopy the successful candidate will explore completely new types of topological spin textures in chiral magnets and their functional properties, investigating, e.g., magnetic disclinations and helimagnetic domain walls. Analogous to magnetic skyrmions, such topological defects represent stable field configurations that can be manipulated at ultra-low energy, allowing device paradigms to be extended into new realms of magnetism.

The applicant must hold a PhD in physics, materials science, materials chemistry or similar. The successful candidate will have profound hands-on expertise in scanning probe microscopy, with a specific focus on magnetic force microscopy, and a strong background in magnetism. We search for a person that is creative, innovative and can work independently. The ideal candidate will like to solve challenging experimental problems and will have good communication skills, as well as experience in international collaborations.

The duration of the postdoctoral research position is three years. Aspired starting date is August 1, 2017.

The primary workplace will be the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, NTNU, Trondheim, Norway. The appointment of the postdoctoral researcher will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees. The position as postdoctoral researcher is remunerated according to the Norwegian State salary scale. There is a 2% deduction for superannuation contribution.

The national labour force must reflect the composition of the population to the greatest possible extent. NTNU wants to increase the proportion of women in its scientific posts. Women are encouraged to apply. The position adheres to the Norwegian Government’s policy of equal opportunity regardless of ethnicity, age and gender.
