Exciting opportunities exist for students wishing to pursue a doctoral degree in the areas of infectious disease and diabetes research, within the newly established Infection, Immunity and Metabolism Group. Students will be based at the state of the art Translational Research Institute (TRI) in Brisbane. Various doctoral projects are available, ranging from basic science to larger cohort studies involving longitudinal follow up of diabetic close contacts of tuberculosis patients.

Mater Research is a world-class medical research institute based in South Brisbane, Australia. Mater Research has had a presence at Mater hospitals for many years, first established in 1998. Now with more than 300 laboratory and clinical researchers, Mater Research has expanded its reach across Mater's hospitals and health services, and is an internationally recognised leader in medical research. 

Mater Research is a founding partner of the TRI, working together with The University of Queensland Diamantina Institute, Queensland University of Technology's Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation, and the Princess Alexandra Hospital's Centres of Health Research to build a world-class facility supporting medical research and its translation into clinical practice.

Mater Research and The University of Queensland formalised a longstanding relationship to form Mater Research Institute – The University of Queensland (MRI-UQ), a collaborative alliance between two leading institutions working together to achieve the best possible research discoveries in health. 

The role

Prospective applicants will have a strong interest in clinical research in the field of infectious and metabolic diseases and good knowledge of immunology, microbiology and/or cell biology. The successful applicant will belong to a multidisciplinary research environment that has strong collaborations across Australia, USA, UK and South Africa. Although,  experience in working with pathogens in a physical containment level 3 laboratory and working with laboratory animals is desirable, it is not essential and appropriate training and supervision will be provided to the successful candidates. This doctoral training will be an ideal opportunity for both domestic and international medical and nonmedical graduates who are planning an academic and/or clinical research career.

The person

Prospective applicants must meet the following entry requirements:

  1. Applicants should possess a bachelor with honours or master's, or equivalent degree with distinguished academic records and relevant research experience.
  2. Applicants should be able to enrol full-time in the doctoral training program.
  3. Applicants should have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work effectively within a multidisciplinary research team.
  4. Applicants should be able to demonstrate the ability to understand and develop skills in clinical research methodology and biostatistics.
  5. Applicants should have excellent scientific writing and communication skills
  6. Applicants should be highly self-motivated and able to work independently

Careful consideration will be given to letters of recommendation from faculty members or research mentors who have close first-hand knowledge of the applicant's academic and research abilities. 

Remuneration

Selected prospective students will receive assistance to apply for either, the APA or for international students, an International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS). The current APA scholarship rate is AUD$26,682.00 per annum (2017 rate, indexed annually) tax-free for three years with a possible six month extension in approved circumstances.

In addition a there will be a top-up stipend of $5000 per annum for the first year, which may be extended on an annual basis, based on progress and performance.
