Located in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne; a vibrant city with a flourishing visual and performing arts scene and home to numerous creative and cultural venues; the Department of Arts is a leading centre for supporting and energising creative practice and academic study informed by cultural partnerships, inter-disciplinary collaborations and through national and international networks.

As a member of the Faculty Executive team, you will lead, grow and develop the future of the department, in line with the University Vision. We are looking to appoint an outstanding academic leader with an international research profile as Head of Department. In addition, you will also be Professor in any of the disciplines represented in the department. In the first instance appointment as Head is for 5 years, after which you will have the opportunity to focus on research, teaching and scholarship in your Professorial role.

The Department of Arts is ranked in the top 20 in the UK (Arts and Design). It is made up of 3 distinct communities of practice: Fine Art and Animation; Film, TV and Performance; and Visual and Material Cultures. Across these three communities there are more than 50 staff . Staff exhibit at venues across the world, publish widely, and collaborate with the cultural sector and creative organisations internationally. There are more than 600 students in the department from undergraduate to a thriving PGR community.

Your ability to think and act strategically adapting to the changing external environment is key to success in this role. You will have exceptional communication and interpersonal skills and proven ability to influence and facilitate the development of others to achieve desired results. A successful record of leadership, management and development is essential.
