Head of Centre for Design

The University of Macau (UMacau) is the flagship public university in Macao, which gives it a unique advantage when pursuing the goal of becoming a world-class university with regional characteristics. In recent years, the university has made great progress in various areas, gaining increasing international recognition for its teaching, research, and community service. To better support higher education development in Macao and to meet society’s ever-increasing demand for high-quality professionals, the university relocated to a new campus of approximately 1.09 square kilometres in August 2014.

With a state-of-the-art campus, the implementation of Asia’s largest residential college system, the establishment of new faculties and well-equipped laboratories, the increasing number of students and faculty members recruited from around the world, UMacau possesses great potential and provides exciting new possibilities for professional development.

Centre for Design

Centre for Design will be a newly established centre under the Institute of Collaborative Innovation (ICI). This Centre will be committed to training personnel in design and innovation, increasing the creativity of design talents, and establishing an international platform for design exchange and interdisciplinary research in order to move Macao’s cultural and creative industries forward. Owing to UMacau’s multidisciplinary background, covering humanities, business administration, education, health sciences, law, science and technology, social sciences and other disciplines, the Centre will strive for interdisciplinary research collaborations among the faculties and other local and international institutions. To realize its mission, the University of Macau is seeking dynamic and visionary candidates for the position of Head of Centre for Design.

The successful candidate is expected to formulate and develop the Masters Programme which will cover the sub-disciplines including Interaction and Service Design, Strategic Design and Media Innovation. Moreover, the ideal candidate should have expertise appropriate to a joint appointment in the Department of Communication, Faculty of Social Sciences, and may take on a leadership role in developing the department’s contributions to Macao’s cultural and creative industries. The Department of Communication offers broad-based curricula leading to Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD degrees covering various areas of communication studies (communication theory, intercultural communication, organizational communication, communication skills); vocationally-oriented public communication (public relations, advertising, event planning); media studies and journalism (journalism writing and publication, mass media, new media, digital culture); creative and cultural industries (video production, photography, animation); and cultural studies (cultural and critical theory, cinema, popular culture).


The successful candidate must have a PhD, preferably with interdisciplinary knowledge in areas related to Design and Communication. Distinguished record of research and publication at an international level, a demonstrable record of excellence in teaching, including post-graduate supervision and administrative or leadership experience in a university are highly preferred.
Candidates must be fluent in English. Ability to speak Chinese is considered an asset, though not a prerequisite for the appointment.

The ideal candidate is qualified to be appointed as Full Professor or higher in rank.

The selected candidate may assume duty as early as August 2017.
