The Colorado State University (CSU) Veterinary Teaching Hospital provides 24/7 professional veterinary care to the public, communication with referring veterinarians and education to Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Students.
The mission of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital is to educate the next generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community every day. The Veterinary Teaching Hospital also strives to meet the goals of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the University through service, outreach and education of professional veterinary medical students, residents and interns.
The Pharmacy Service is an integral part of the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, which provides state of the art veterinary care to domestic, equine, livestock, avian, zoological and exotic animals. The Pharmacy service instructs professional and paraprofessional Veterinary Medical students, technicians, interns, residents and faculty clinicians in a hospital setting with the emphasis on practical applications of pharmacy medication administration and client/patient education.
The Pharmacy manager position is responsible for the management of the Pharmacy Service at the James L. Voss VTH, ensuring legal and sound operations, as well as cost and time efficiency of personnel and daily operations. Specifically, this position serves the hospital by preparing and dispenses medications for both inpatients and outpatients, instruct clients on prescribed medications, instructs/counsels students and VTH medical teams, adheres to regulatory standards, supervises the Pharmacy Service staff and manages Pharmacy Services daily operations. The Pharmacy Manager serves as a member of the campus hazardous waste committee monitoring drug waste handling. This position is committed to ensuring the delivery of the highest quality of veterinary care with exceptional client service. This position will represent the Pharmacy at VTH Supervisor and Board meetings.
Required Job Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from an accredited college.

• Minimum of five years of experience as a licensed pharmacist.
• Experience cultivating and managing relationships with staff, clinicians, students, clients and referring DVMs.
• Experience prioritizing and effectively manage a high volume pharmacy; function in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment.
• Experience proactively bringing new ideas and solutions to meet the challenges of vast numbers of customers.

Prepares, compounds and dispenses patient prescription medications. Reviews and interprets clinician orders, reviewing for accuracy, selected items, observing safety issues and detecting therapeutic incompatibilities. Utilizes the correct equipment, preparing and /or checking labels, supplying information as necessary to complete an order. Dispenses medications by compounding, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticals. Controls medications by monitoring drug therapies. Provides pharmacological information by answering questions and requests of veterinary care professionals. Counsels clients on drug therapies. Completes log forms to document activities within the service. Removes outdated and damaged drugs from the pharmacy inventory. Utilizes the VTH electronic health information system/s to complete pharmacy orders, invoicing and purchasing/inventory.

Leads Pharmacy Service team. Ensures the delivery of the highest quality of veterinary care with exceptional customer service. Establishes pharmacy service standards in alignment with VTH service standards. Supervise staff and hourly personnel. Establishes orientation and training. Sets work standards. Mentors and resolves personnel issues as needed. Conduct and/or request corrective or disciplinary actions as necessary. Establishes standards of performance during the yearly planning process. Completes mid-year performance reviews and end of the year performance evaluations. Establishes workforce planning methodologies and staffing model. Conducts effective selection and hiring practices. Creates job descriptions/PDQs, Assigns staff work schedules, approve leave requests/time clock entries and manage leave accruals. Partners with HR to manage workers’ compensation, FMLA and extended leave situations. Trains and oversees training of VTH staff. Participates in staff development. Attends specialized training, certifications and/or industry conferences. Conducts staff meetings. Advises the Hospital Director, Hospital Administrator, Hospital Management Team, and Clinicians on all matters of service activities.

Oversees and manages the daily operations of the VTH Pharmacy. Organizes and directs workflow. Coordinates resources (staff, equipment, product, facility) to provide pharmacy services. Manages pharmacy budget. Partners with VTH Administration to establish pricing and charges. Provides oversight of pharmacy purchasing and expenses. Monitors inventory system both ordering and receiving. Participates in regulatory and CSU/VTH financial/inventory audits. Identify new equipment necessary for continued operation as well as potential equipment needed to expand services. Monitors the waste of controlled substances as well as drug waste for proper disposal. Manage the Cubex pharmacy dispensing system. Establish policy for Cubex use related to user approvals, new items, clinician codes, drug changes/updates and hospital staff education for proper use protocol. Establishes controls for delivering, stocking and labeling medicine throughout the hospital. Organizes the pharmacy in a safe and efficient manner. Oversees purchasing of supplies, supervising and documenting special research projects. Oversees maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Quality Assurance (QA) for the pharmacy. Generates SOPs and troubleshoots quality assurance issues as needed (includes incident reports). Responds to and addresses patient care, quality and service issues. Supports the pharmacy portion of the VTH Health Information System/s. Works with IT staff as needed to keep system functional and communicating appropriately with/within the VTH Hospital Information System (HIS).

Develops hospital staff’s pharmacological knowledge by participating in clinical programs; training/teaching pharmacy staff, students, interns, residents, and veterinary clinicians. Provides pharmacological information by answering questions, counseling on drug therapies and addressing the requests of veterinary care professionals. Produces current VTH drug formulary annually. Produces current pharmacy procedure manual. Serves as a preceptor for pharmacy students from University of Colorado, University of Wyoming, Drake University and Creighton University. Serves as a member of the hazardous waste group for campus monitoring drug waste handling. Maintains pharmacological knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies. Develops relationships within hospital in order to improve pharmacy services. Partners with hospital leaders to problem solve and streamline processes. On call for faculty, students and staff. Maintain and update PDMP files for new drugs and clinicians. Serves as primary contact for new and existing electronic systems.
