Location: Cranfield, Bedfordshire

Cranfield is an exclusively postgraduate university that is a global leader for education and transformational research in technology and management. Cranfield Manufacturing is one of the eight major themes at Cranfield University. Our manufacturing capability is world-leading and combines a multi-disciplinary approach that integrates design, technology and management expertise.

This position is part of our Manufacturing Informatics Centre that focuses on digitisation, simulation and optimisation of manufacturing processes. Our research includes a mix of ‘pull’ in terms of the needs of the manufacturing sector, and ‘push’ from the opportunities presented by information and communication technologies. We aim to extend the reach of informatics into high-value manufacturing, for example, by digitising and optimising skill-intensive manufacturing processes using new human/machine interfaces and sensing systems that adapt to complex or changing situations.

With increasing connectivity in manufacturing on one hand and growing cyber threats on the other hand, there is an urgent need to address the challenges associated with cyber-secure engineering systems and processes. This position focuses on undertaking research and teaching in cyber-secure engineering systems and processes and developing a research team in the area. The post will contribute across Cranfield Manufacturing and develop complementary capability in cyber-secure manufacturing.

Candidates will have track record of research in the field of cyber-secure engineering systems and processes, capable of being fully research active, with the ability to draw in national and international research projects and strengthen Cranfield’s international reputation for excellence in manufacturing in general and cyber-secure manufacturing in particular. You will have a PhD in computing, engineering, cyber security or a related area. You must have specific experience in at least one of the following areas: design of secure engineering processes, risk management of industrial control systems, and security of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and systems. You must have demonstrable excellent understanding of the contribution and nature of the relationships between cyber, personnel and physical security in delivering robust cyber-secure manufacturing. Research background in digital manufacturing or manufacturing informatics is desirable. You will have experience in writing high quality papers in top rated journals and in developing research proposals. You must demonstrate a proven track record of teaching and MSc/PhD supervision in a relevant aspect of cyber-secure manufacturing.

This post is subject to a screening process which may in course delay the start date. Successful candidates must meet the necessary security requirements before they can be appointed.
