Description of Work Unit

To educate the next generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community every day. The Intermediate Care unit is an integral part of the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital which provides 24/7 state-of- the-art preoperative care and medical boarding.

Position Summary

This position will provide care to non-critical patients hospitalized in ICW who are recovering from anesthesia, surgery, or require medical boarding and/or observation.

Minimum Qualifications

An associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in veterinary/animal health technology AND one year of experience assisting in animal surgery, administering anesthesia to animals and/or performing veterinary surgery.

Substitutions

Two years of experience as defined by the department will substitute for each year of required education. A bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from an accredited college or university in veterinary/animal health technology will substitute for the associate’s degree and, at the agency’s discretion, the year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following competencies and experience outlined as highly desired for this position:
Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) or Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) credential.
Experience communicating successfully across disciplines including students, medical staff, faculty, and clients in order to work collaboratively and provide training.
Genuine desire to provide nursing care for ill/injured animals with a compassionate approach.
Experience training others in technical nursing care proceeds and minor veterinary procedures.
Ability to maintain a positive attitude and a pro-active approach in a fast-paced and challenging environment.
Experience prioritizing caseload and using time-management to effectively meet the needs of patients.

Essential Job Duties

Job Duty Category Patient Care Duty/Responsibility

The position provides care to hospitalized patients in Intermediate Care. The position recovers patients from anesthesia, properly administers medications and fluids as needed, and provides overall patient comfort, under the direction of the IC supervisor and work leader. This position works in partnership with the PVM student assigned to the case, and the primary VTH clinician. This position will communicate with other services regarding the care and transport of patients as necessary within departments of the VTH, and transfers patients as needed. The position will accurately perform basic drug calculations, observe and recognize changes in patient status, communicate effectively with the IC team, and demonstrate caring behavior with all patients. This position ensures patient readiness for discharge from the VTH.

Percentage Of Time 70% Job Duty Category Maintains Service Area Duty/Responsibility

Responsible for maintaining equipment in IC, and submitting work orders as needed to make sure that repairs are made. Responsible for cleaning and upkeep of IC unit. Responsible for checking stock levels, and replenishing as needed. Responsible for checking drugs and supplies for expiration date, and replacing when needed. This position adheres to VTH purchasing and Central Supply protocol.

Percentage Of Time 20% Job Duty Category Documentation and Billing Duty/Responsibility

This position records all relevant information into the patient’s medical record. This position ensures that all IC patients have been billed accurately before being discharged from the VTH.
