Description of Work Unit
CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. Poinsett Electronic Combat Range is a 12,500-acre air to ground training range utilized by all branches of the military. It is located 8 miles west of Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, SC. Sumter is located in the geographic center of the state and enjoys a moderate climate with mild winters. The average winter temperature is 45°F, and the average summer temperature is 81°F.
Incumbent will be a member of the Carolina Wildland Fire Support Module for the U.S. Air Force Wildland Fire Center based at Poinsett Electronic Combat Range. The Gulf Coast Wildland Fire Support Module will be responsible for implementing prescribed burns and responding to wildfires on Air Force property throughout the Carolina’s and the southeast U.S.
Required Job Qualifications
The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
• A High School Diploma, General Education Development (GED), or equivalent required.
• A minimum of two year’s work experience in fire management is required.
• Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date and a Class B commercial driver’s license within 6 months of employment
• Meet requirements for the NWCG standards for Fire Fighter Type 2, which includes an annual pack test at arduous level and fire line refresher (maintained annually).
Preferred Job Qualifications
• Experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment in wildland fire and forestry practices is desired.
• Experience with prescribed fire and wildfire suppression, familiarity with ecosystems and fire regimes of the southeast is highly preferred.
• Degree in natural resource management or related field.
• Experience compiling and utilizing environmental and ecological data using Trimble Nomad personal data assistants as well as ArcPad software is beneficial.

Job Duty Category Fire Operations Duty/Responsibility
Serves on prescribed fire and fuels projects in positions for which qualified. Technically administers all aspects of the prescribed fire/fuels plan, ensuring that preparation, ignition, holding, mop-up, and rehabilitation are completed to the specified standards. During the implementation of prescribed fires plans, fuels projects, and wildfire response plans, monitors fire behavior, evaluates fire effects, identifies potential problems and makes recommendations. Supports wildfire suppression efforts in initial attack and in follow-up actions to safely and effectively control wildfires in accordance with the identified appropriate management response. Operates/maintains a variety of motor vehicles to transport equipment, supplies, crew members, etc. Uses/maintains specialized equipment to support firing operations and suppression activities such as ATVs, UTV’s. This position requires work on active military training ranges with potential risk for unexploded ordnance and other related hazards. In addition, regular travel (up to 15 weeks per year) to other Air Force installations to perform similar tasks throughout the southeast will be required. engines, bulldozers, farm tractors, swamp buggies, chainsaws, firing devices, etc.

Incumbent will assist implementing land management plans which will include timber marking, RCW monitoring, herbicide applications, and road work. Other duties assigned to this position will include compiling and utilizing environmental and ecological data using personal data assistants (PDA) and ArcPad software, collecting data in post burn areas using a PDA, and ensuring that information collected gets turned in to proper personnel to get downloaded into a database.

Participates in drafting prescribed fire/fuels management plans following the interagency template. Prepares and reviews plans and or plan components such as annual operating plans, training plans, fire suppression plans, safety plans, and individual projects plans.
Percentage Of Time 15 Job Duty Category Wildland Fire and Safety Training Duty/Responsibility
Participates in wildland fire and safety training in the techniques, practices, and methods of fire suppression and in the safe, efficient operation and use of tools, equipment, and vehicles used in fire suppression activities, with emphasis on those used for the particular function assigned. Participates in preparedness reviews, proficiency checks and drills, safety sessions, and after action reviews. Ensures own and others welfare and safety in all aspects of the assignment.
