After this period the post will revert to Professor of History within the department.

We would welcome candidates from all aspects of the History field.

Royal Holloway’s History Department represents a vigorous community of staff and students interacting and learning at the forefront of research and methodological innovation. We are one of the largest and liveliest History departments to be found in the UK with nearly 40 research-active staff and around 1000 students (including single and joint honours undergraduate students, Masters students, and over 100 PhD students).  92% of our graduates go on to further study or employment in a wide range of careers.  Within the University of London we ranked first for student satisfaction in the 2015 NSS, while in the most recent research evaluation exercise (REF 2014) we were placed joint first among UK History departments for research with impact of the highest 4* and 3* quality.  72% of our publications were judged as ‘world leading’ and ‘internationally excellent’, helping to position Royal Holloway within the top 25% of all UK universities for research.  Staff research expertise extends from ancient to contemporary times; from Britain to America, the Middle East, Asia and Australia; and encompasses a wide range of different kinds of history and historical approach.  Moreover, this exciting diversity is reflected in the broad choice of modules that we offer our undergraduate and postgraduate students.

You must have sound organisational and communication skills and be able to demonstrate the qualities of academic leadership necessary for the Headship of a department. It is expected that candidates will have had previous administrative experience within an academic context. The essential qualification for this role is educated to PHD level or equivalent.

As Head of Department you will report directly to the Dean of Faculty. The honorarium for this role is currently £10,000 per annum in addition to the advertised professorial salary.

This is a full time and permanent post based in Egham, Surrey where the College is situated in a beautiful, leafy campus near to Windsor Great Park and within commuting distance from London.
