DEPARTMENT FOR BUSINESS, ENGERGY AND INDUSTRIAL STRATEGY
Non-Executive Members of the UK Research and Innovation Board
Remuneration: £9,180 per annum, for 20 days a year (there will be an additional £459 day rate for roles with additional time commitments).
The UK research and innovation funding landscape is about to undergo the most significant reform of the last 50 years.
A new funding body – UK Research and Innovation – will provide overall strategic direction across the nine existing Government funding bodies. UKRI will provide overall strategic direction, representing the sector’s interests globally, and maximising the value of a government investment in research and innovation which totals more than £6bn per annum, and will continue to grow through to the end of this Parliament. It will ensure that the research and innovation system across the whole of the UK has the strategic capacity, the autonomy, and the agility to maintain our world-leading strength in discovery and innovation.
The Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy is now looking to appoint UKRI’s Board. The Board will be vital to the success of UKRI. Working closely with the interim Chair, the CEO and stakeholders across the sector, the Board will establish the new organisation, building vital relationships and partnerships within the UK and globally, developing strategy, prompting UK research and innovation activities and putting the working model for the new system in place. They will shape and lead a high-profile, pioneering new organisation.
These are high-profile, globally important roles, and we are seeking candidates with the experience and personal characteristics to command credibility. The successful candidates should have experience in either conducting research or working in innovative businesses.
Board Members are expected to have the ability to lead a globally-facing organisation, and a personal commitment to the success of UK research and innovation.
There will also be a number of specialist roles on the UKRI Board, including the Innovation Champion and the Audit, Risk and Assurance Committee Chair. We are taking applications and expressions of interest for general Board Members and these specialist roles.
The Innovation Champion will lead in promoting and championing innovation and business interests and providing strategic support to the Innovate UK Executive Chair. The post holder would also sit on the Council of Innovate UK.
The Chair of the Audit, Risk and Assurance Committee will be responsible for supporting the Board and Accounting Officer by leading the Committee in reviewing the comprehensiveness and reliability of assurances on governance, risk management, the control environment and the integrity of financial statements.
Applications are welcome from all, especially women, minority ethnic and disabled candidates who are under-represented at this level in public life.
