Appointment of Pro Vice-Chancellor and Head of College of Biomedical and Life Sciences

Salary is competitive and commensurate with seniority of role.

Cardiff University is an ambitious and innovative university with a bold strategic vision, built on a foundation of excellent teaching and research across a broad set of disciplines. Based in a cosmopolitan thriving capital city, we have a footprint not only in Wales, but nationally and internationally. We were the fastest rising amongst the leading research universities of the Russell Group for our performance in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), climbing 17 places to 5th for quality and 2nd for impact. With annual turnover exceeding £500 million, the University is undergoing a multi-million pound investment programme for which it has successfully raised a £300 million bond.

Within this dynamic context, we are now seeking to appoint an outstanding leader as our Pro Vice-Chancellor and Head of College of Biomedical and Life Sciences. The College is the largest in the University, and brings together seven academic schools (Biosciences, Dentistry, Healthcare Sciences, Medicine, Optometry and Vision Sciences, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Psychology) across a vibrant academic community, providing holistic, student-focused education and state-of-the-art learning facilities. An integrated approach is taken to all aspects of health and bio-scientific research, achieving internationally respected results at all stages of the medical research process, from laboratory science through to improved medical and healthcare practices.

Reporting to the Vice-Chancellor, the Pro Vice-Chancellor will be a member of the University’s Executive Board, and therefore also be expected to play a significant role in developing and delivering Cardiff’s wider institutional strategy. The successful candidate for this role will have an internationally-recognised academic record in a relevant field, and be able to evidence sustained and successful strategic delivery across a complex and diverse institutional context. With exceptional management and leadership capabilities, they will also have the personal authority, presence and expertise to represent the College and the University, effectively furthering its general interests to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
