The School of Chemical Engineering

The School of Chemical Engineering is an international leader in the chemical engineering field and has an excellent international reputation which has been built over four decades at the University. With 35 academic staff, including 17 professors, the School provides quality programs and leadership in chemical engineering education, research and development, and expert consulting to support the process industries. Information about the Faculty and the School may be accessed on the Faculty's web site at http://www.uq.edu.au/eait

The role

The project aims to conduct an experimental study to investigate the lift capacity of foams in Coal Seam Gas (CSG) wells.

CSG wells are asscociated with production of a significant amount of water which needs to be removed to allow the gas to enter the wellbore. Down-hole pumps such as Progressing cavity pumps (PCPs) are mostly used to dewater CSG wells. These down-hole pumps are very expensive and prone to failure due to the interference of solids produced in the well. This project aims to investigate the capability of foams to dewater CSG wells and lift the solids.

The successful applicant will be working and meeting with our counterparts in (Arrow Energy, QGC (Shell), APLNG and Santos) to discuss the project.

The person

Expression of Interests are invited from enthusiastic applicants with a degree in Chemical Engineering/Petroluem Engineering/Minining Engineering or Mechanical Engineering to join our research group in RQ3 2017. The successful candidate should have demonstrated knowledge and ability in multi-phase flows, liquid foam/froth, experimental design and performing experiments.

Applicants must fulfill the PhD admission criteria for the University of Queensland, and demonstrate excellent capacity and potential for research. Demonstration of research ability through publications in peer reviewed international journals is desirable.
