Deputy Deans (Research)
Faculty of Social Sciences

Celebrating our 50th anniversary in 2014, the University of Essex is ranked 19th in the Research Excellence Framework 2014 and the 2016 National Student Survey results placed Essex joint 8th out of all English mainstream universities and in the top 10 for the fourth year in a row. In the mock Teaching Excellence Framework published in June 2016, the Times Higher placed Essex 13th. Confirming our global reputation, the Times Higher Education World Rankings placed Essex in the world’s top 20 for international outlook and in the QS World Rankings Essex is ranked 25th for the most international student community and 60th for the most international academic community in the world. The university is ranked 30th in the 2017 Times Good University Guide.

The University is seeking to appoint three Deputy Deans (Research), one for each of our faculties, at a very exciting time in our development. Our Strategic Plan 2013-19 sets our ambition to be acknowledged nationally and internationally as a leading research-intensive university. At the half way point in our Plan we have risen to 30th in the Times Good University Guide and by 2019 we want to be firmly in the top 25 of UK universities and all of our subjects in the top 20% of their discipline within the UK. Our aim is to grow the size of the University by 50% by 2019 to 15,000 students and to double the number of staff submitted to the next REF to 600. Having grown from about 9,500 to 14,000 students, we are on target to meet our goals – and applications are up for entry in October 2017.

The Deputy Deans (Research) are among the principal officers of the University. These newly established positions are an exciting opportunity to take on a key research leadership role, and would be suited to those who have the experience and ambition to support the production of world-class research in a research-intensive University. These are pan-university roles requiring the Deputy Dean (Research) to work within their own Faculty and also with the Deputy Deans (Research) in other Faculties to promote cross-faculty collaboration and to co-ordinate major strategic research initiatives. The role will be of interest to those who may have experience of leading research initiatives, have a clear understanding and experience of the external funding environment, an understanding and experience of the impact agenda and those who have led, or played a major role in leading, the writing of REF submissions.  We would welcome applications from candidates with experience of working with industry to develop innovative joint research projects and generate new funding streams.

The Deputy Dean (Research) plays a crucial role in supporting the Faculty Executive Dean to implement and achieve the University’s strategic objectives for research.  This will include providing research leadership within the faculty, supporting the development and enhancement of excellence in research and coordinating and facilitating the delivery of research impact.  You will be seconded to the Deputy Dean (Research) role for three years in the first instance and will not have teaching responsibilities during this period. On returning to a substantive role of Reader or Professor in your department, this will include the full range of academic duties including education, research, leadership and citizenship.  A successful external candidate will be appointed to a substantive post in the appropriate department within the Faculty at either Reader or Professorial level commensurate with skills and experience and will be submitted to REF2021.

The Deputy Dean (Research) is line managed by and reports to the Faculty Executive Dean, while working with the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) to support the effective implementation of the University’s strategic research objectives.  The post is a full-time appointment, with up to 0.8 FTE allocated to the Deputy Dean (Research) role and 0.2 FTE allocated for maintaining and developing their research career. There is some flexibility on the time allocation for candidates who may be committed to externally funded research projects.

You should have a PhD in a discipline relevant to the Faculty within which you are applying, together with a demonstrable research track record and expertise in a discipline relevant to one of the departments in the Faculty. Knowledge/experience of the impact agenda, delivering research impact and of the Research Excellence Framework process is also essential.

Appointment will be made at Reader (Grade 10) £49,772 - £55,999 per annum or at the Professorial level (Grade 11 salary scale) commensurate with skills and experience.  This post also carries a leadership allowance for the term of office.
